THE NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB DRAW FOR CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS THE WAIRARAPA TOURNAMENT. (By “Half-Volley.”} The Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association's annual championship and handicap tournament, which was held at Masterton last week, proved most successful. There was a record number of' entries comprising many promising young players. The chief events in the championship section were won bj r Wellington players, the boys’ and girls’ singles being the only titles gained by Wairarapa competitors. ■ The finalists in the men's singles were N. R. C. Wilson (Wellington), who defeated Court (Dunedin) in two straight sets in one 'semi-final event, and Dymond (Christchurch), who gained the decision over Lowry (Hastings).. , 6—l in the third set of the other semi-, final after two advantage sets had 'been played? The final between Wilson and Dymond provided some thrilling rallies, the chief feature being the splendid back court play. Although Dymond made some wonderful recoveries, particularly in the last set, Wilson was the more confident of the two and won the match 7 —5, 6 —2, 6 —-1. The final of the men's doubles was contested by Wilson and Sandral and Lowry (Hastings) and Wheeler (Wanganui), the former combination winning in three straight sets. Sandrad’s volleying at the -net was a feature of the match- and he and Wilson had little difficulty in capturing the first two sets. Howver, Lowry and Wheeler made a strong bid in-'the third set and led- 4—l, but the Wellington players took the next five games in succession and the match. . ■ '. : The semi-finalists in .the ladies’ .singles were Miss Gibson (Tima.ru)and Mrs. Scott, and Miss Whyte (Wellington) and Miss D. The final of the combined doubles was won by Wilson and. Miss Todd (Wellington), Who defeated. Lowry and Miss Gi'bsoh, in a match that was not productive of any brilliant tennis. The Wellington Lawn Tennis Association has accepted challenge from the Canterbury. Association .for* the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield at present held by Wellington and the match will take place oil the Wellington association’s courts at Miramar ; on February 13 knd 14.
