DANGER OF “DOPED” WICKETS
ENGLISH PLAYERS BECOME STALE. SYSTEM OF LAYERS PROPOSED. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. London, Jan. 28. “Unless we are very • careful, doped wickets are going to break the bowlers’ hearts and ruin the game,” declared Lord Hawke, at the annual meeting of the Yorkshire Cricket Club? Doping means putting liquid manure, and in some cases fish oil on the pitch, and assures a perfect wicket from tiie batsmen’s viewpoint. “Yorkshire is setting an example by ordering the groundsmen not to use unfair dopes,” said Lord Hawke. “England’s. best players have too much cricket and become absolutely stale. A halt should be . called in the interminable programme of play. If this is ■ impossible ■ different players should be chosen, thus enabling the others to rest,.”
