(By Wire —Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. With H. Gray in the saddle Biddy’s Boy was backed down to a very short price for the Trial Stakes,; being nearly three times as well backed as the second fancy, Smithfield. The judgment of investors was borne out by the result, for Biddy’s Boy hopped out smartly from No. 2 and gave nothing a chance to win easily from Smithfield. Biddy’s Boy was first to begin and was the leader into the straight from Smithfield, Praetor and Royal Survey, and he went on to score by a length and a-half from Smithfield, who defeated Praetor by three lengths. Royal Survey was a couple of lengths away fourth with Howick and Gay .Duke next in a strung-out field. This was Biddy’s Boy's first start 'since he went into A. Cook’s stable, and he outclassed the others, winning with a good deal in hand. Smithfield and Praetor made creditable- showings and Royal Survey also shaped fairly. The others were all well beaten, although there’ was some excuse for Hit the Deck, who got away very badly. LUMINARY STAYS WELL, For the Orewa Highweight Handicap Air King was slightly better fancied than Luminary and the Brampton-Neil bracket. A fair start saw- Air King and Luminary first away and they were together for about two furlongs, when Luminary drew out to lead along the back four lengths clear of Air King, with a, gap of five lengths to Bizarro. Luminary led into the straight from Air King, Neil, Glena Bay and Brampton. Lumin? ary stayed on to win by half a- length.

from Brampton, who beat Neil by a similar margin, Claremore was right up fourth, followed by Glena Ray and St, Aines. Luminary was bustled to head off Air King early but once he reached the front he never looked like being beaten. Claremore and Glena. Bay were staying on and should do better over th© longer distance on the second day. GOLD DAY AN EASY WINNER. Carrying two and a-half pounds overweight, Gold Day was installed a good favourite over Gold Money and Ti Tree for the Zealandia Handicap, and he realised the expectations of his admirers by winning handsomely. Ti Tree and Gold Day moved first, Gold Day leading along the back while Ti Tree dropped right back last. Near the top White Wings went up on the outside of Gold Day and they .were the ' leaders rounding the turn from Loving Cup, Volimond and Big Bertha. Nothing had a chance with Gold Day in the straight and he ran home a winner by two lengths from Volimond. Big Bertha was .a length away third and Taneriri was fourth. Next came Ti Tree, 'White Wings and Llanore. The winner was having his first race in open company and he won like a good one. Gold Day has notched three wins and a second in his last four starts, yolimond and Big Bertha ran good races and Taneriri shaped well enough to indicate that he will not be long in striking form. ANTIQUE’S CUP VICTORY. The Takapuna Cup was productive of an exciting finish, Antique coming home strongly to win from Royal Doulton and Lucy rose. Speculation was brisk and in a good pool there was most support for In the Shade, Gay Cockade and Antique. There was a slight delay at the start and when they were eventually let go • Gay Cockade, who was half turned round, lost about 50 yards. Sir Mond, Eager Rose and Flying Prince showed out early, Flying Prince and Eager Rose making the early running. In the Shade ran up”fast along the back and was in charge just after passing the first furlongs post from Gay Cockade, Sir Mond and Flying Prince. There was little between In the Shade, Gay Cockade and Antique entering the straight, with. Sir Mond, Lucy Rose and Royal Doulton right up. When they straightened up Antique took charge and stalled off a. challenge from Royal Doutton to win by a neck. Lucy Rose was a length and a half away third and In the Shade was close up fourth. Next to cross the line were Gay Cockade, Eager Rose,' Sir Mond and Mosque. Antique was always handily placed and when his rider asked him for an effort at the turn he responded well to score in good style. Royal Doulton also finished well and Lucy Rose stayed better than was generally expected. In the Shade went a fine race not at all well ridden by Bagby, who made his run too soon. Tho unlucky horse of the race was Gay Cockade, -who was set an impossible task whefi he lost so much ground at the start. In spite of this he made a splendid showing and faded only in the last 100 yards after running through the field to be with the leaders at the turn. It looked as if Gay Cockade must have won with an even start. ANOTHER FAVOURITE SCORES. The Ferry Handicap was a good betting race with Rafflight slightly better fancied than Orapai and Leasehold. Rafflight jumped out clear from. No. 1 and made along the back from Orapai and Crimestor. With, a couple.of furlongs covered Orapai ’ assumed command and was the leader into the straight from Mauriaena, Rafflight, Crimestor and Valmarie. In a good race home Rafflight won by a head- from. Valmaire, who defeated Orapai by three-quarters of s length. Sub-Editor was fourth, followed by Mauriaena, Crown Arch and Gay Idea. Rafflight was well handled by R.. McTavish and finished well to just beat Valmarie, who came home well after being none too well placed early. Orapai seemed to be running very comfortably at the home turn but just faded near the post. . Leasehold failed 1 to gather his speed quickly enough to have a chance. Foot Rule got a long way back early aqd little notice may be taken of, s her HIGH COMEDY SURPRISES.,

There was a. mild surprise in the Calliope Handicap, High Comedy winning at a good price. Easter Time and Fedora were the favourites and were both at short prices, High Comedy being fifth choice. Columba and Princess Bede were first to move and they led early from High Comedy. Columba and Princess Bede were joined by Fedora at the top, Princess Bede and Fedora being the leaders into the straight with High Comedy moving Up on the outside-and Persham and Easter Time next. When in line for the post High Comedy drew out to win by a length and a half from Easter Time. United finished well and was two lengths away third and Princess Bede was fourth. Next came Fedora and Speedmint.- The winner has been expected to run well on several occasions but this was the first time he showed his true form. Easter Time finished splendidly. Gray appeared to be very confident on him at the turn. Fedora missed the jump out and after going very fast for four furlongs faded out in the straight.

HAVILAND WINS COMFORTABLY.

The Hauraki Hack Handicap was won comfortably by Haviland, who was a slightly better favourite than Emancipation, Smithfield,- the runner-up, being a good third choice. Biddy Comet was first to break the line and made play from Smithfield and Gold Lily until about four furlongs from home, when Haviland moved smartly on the outsidp. Smithfield and Haviland were together in the lead at the turn from Spring Abbey, Biddy Comet and- Emancipation. In the run home Haviland drew away to score by a length and a half from Smithfield, who defeated Spring Abbey by three lengths. Gold Lily was fourth, followed by Biddy Comet and Emancipation. Haviland stripped a very fit horse and once Gray asked him for a serious effort lie -gave nothing a chance. Smithfield ran another solid race- but Emancipation never threatened danger. Gold Lily and Spring Abbey shaped respectably, although neither was impressive. ,

PAGANELLI WINS HANDSOMELY.

Solid wagering on the Stewards’ Handicap saw Paganelli installed a slightly better favourite than Leitrim and Refresher. From a good start Eaglet, Tetrarchate and Paganelli- were smartest to begin and at the end of the first furlong Tetrarchate, Refresher, Leitrim and Honiton were racing in a bunch ahead of Paganelli, with Karanaapai last. Paganelli was just behind the leaders at the turn and once round the bend asserted his superiority to win handsomely by three lengths from Leitrim. Karangapai was half a length away third and Eaglet was fourth. Next came Honiton, Tetrarchate and Refresher. Paganelli showed a glimpse of his old form and soon put the issue beyond doubt when the straight was reached. Leitrim hung on well at the finish after beino- one of the leaders when the pace was torrid early. The early pace beat Teirarchate, Refresher and . Honiton and they, all stopped at the finish, although Tetrarchate did not fail until well into the straight. Karangapai made a very creditable showing and Eaglet was battling on at the finish without showing any real dash. Paganelli was the fifth favourite to win on the day.
