EXCELLENT COMEDY DRAMA. ! “The pirl Said No,” William Haines’ new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer all-talking picture, which will open at the King’s Theatre to-night, is said to be as fine as “Alias Jimmy Valentine,” and deals with the adventures of a young man facing the early stages of business life. Haines plays the early scenes with the same gusto he exhibited in “Alias Jimmy Valentine,” and is hammered by responsibility and hard work until he becomes a real busineis man. The “rescue,” with several hilariously comic angles, the scenes in the brokerage office, showing a typical A Vail Street plant in actual operation, the touching family scenes, giving intimate details of his home life, and the delicious clowning with the heroine, at the night club are among the highlights of the picture. ELTHAM THEATRE. “KING OF JAZZ.” The cast of the greatest comedy stars from both the stage and the screen appear in the hilarious comedy sketches of “King of Jazz,” the super-extravaganza starring Paul Whiteman and his band, which will be shown at Eltham to-night. With Whiteman, Laura La Plante, Jeanette Loff, Glenn Tryon, Merna Kennedy, Kathryn Crawford, “Slim” Summerville and others from the screen, musical comedy, vaudeville and the stage, the clever sketches provide laughs between the spectacle numbers of the picture. There are six of these sketches in the revue, all photographed in technicolour just as are the colourful song specialities and the musical spectacle numbers. Thus specialties are blended with spectacle and comedy with. both. The balance of “King of Jazz” is Whitemau’s debut on the screen as the world’s most famous maestro of music. One of the sketches was especially written as a vehicle for his comedy talents. Laura La, Plante has long been one'of the favourite comediennes of the picture world, and all the other screen stars, in the comedy sketches ar© favourites. MATAU DISTRICT NEWS.
