The Nippon Yusen Kaisha Company passed the half-yearly dividend, and at the meeting in Tokio the chairman explained that the loss on trading was not only very heavy, but was greater than was expected. Freight earnings were £550,000 less than for the previous term, although passenger revenue showed a slight increase. Current expenses had been reduced by £200,000, but a large sum had been written off for depreciation and from the structural repair fund for the four costly new motor-ships, which wore hardly yet earning a profit. A substantial sum had been applied to writing down secm-ities. The chairman attributed the present situation to the world depression, coupled with exceptional circumstances in Japan, such as the removal of the gold embargo, general retrenchment and the heavy fall in the price of silver.
