HOT SPRING IN RIVER
BRIDGE SUPPORT RAISED. PROBLEM FOR ENGINEER. An unforeseen difficulty has arisen in connection with the construction of the railway bridge which is being built for the Taupo Totara Timber Company, Limited, across the Waikato River at Ongoroto. A steel cylinder was lowered into the bottom of the river to form a support for the bridge, and the water was pumped out preparatory to lowering the cylinder further. Workmen were employed, inside the cylinder to excavate the foundations for the bridge supports when a hot spring was tapped. The heat was neu-. tralised by letting in cold water and the work proceeded. Last week the cylinder was lifted. Bft. by thermal activity beneath the bed of the river. The men in the cylinder were not immediately inconvenienced and. were liberated without difficulty. An Auckland engineer was sent for and he is faced with the problem of finding a foundation for the structure in another site, or of combating the pressure from below.
