Rec. 7.15 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 28. Afire at sea, the British motor-ship Eaton broadcast an S.O.S. this morning for assistance, saying that there was a lire among the shipment of case oil. It has since been learned that the Enton has been safely beached at the southeast end of New Caledonia. -The vessel is in no immediate danger. The sea is smooth, and lighters are proceeding from Noumea for the removal of the cargo. The agents for the Enton received a message from the captain saying the vessel was making very little water, and contradicting the rumour that she was on lire.
The Enton was bound for No.umea, New Caledonia, from Lyttelton. She is a motor-ship of 4425 tons gross. She discharged New York cargo at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin on her recent visit to New Zealand.
