PETROLEUM GAS BLOW-OUT
BLENHEIM BORE DEVELOPMENT. PROGRESS OF THE DRILLING. A powerful blow-out of petroleum gas occurred at 7 o’clock last night at the Blenheim Oil Well Reclamation . Co. Ltd.’s bore at Moturoa. The gas, which was accompanied by a slight amount of brackish water, wae encountered at the 2135 foot level. Some months ago a hit was lost at 2096 feet aiid efforts -to—retrieve"’ it proved.- use-" less so a side bore was mode by means of a whipstock at 2040 feet, and this enabled the drillers to work round the lost bit. When the side bore had progressed a sufficient distance drilling was carried, on by a bit attached to a cable and gravitational forces straightened out the bore.. Since the drilling of the side bore similar strata to that found in the blocked portion of the bore have been encountered at a level 20 feet higher. In the blocked portion of the bore oil. sands were found at 2170 feet.
The petroleum gas at present emanating from the bore has been piped away from the engine. The gas was blowing with considerable force last night.
