REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET

PROVINCE OF TARANAKI

GRAHAM CUP DATE ARRANGED. MEETING OF THE ASSOCIATION. The date of the annual match for the Graham Cup between North and South Taranaki, Lie standard of play and other aspects of the recent Taranaki-Wanga-nui Hawke Cup elimination match at New Plymouth, the case of players who do not go on tour wheil selected to do so and various matters relative to the administration of- representative cricket in Taranaki were discussed at a meeting of the Taranaki Cricket Association in New Plymouth last night, when there were present Messrs. T. H. Bates (president), C. G. Bottrill, W. P. Nicoil, V. Dull', D. F. C. Saxton (northern division), C. E. Betts, L. A. Jennings, C. Massey, 11. D. Hughej (southern division) and J. Brodie (honorary secretary). With reference to a new scheme for Hawke Cup matches submitted by the Manawatu Association the secretary reported that though he had written to the association’s delegate in Christchurcn asking the latter to oppose the scheme when the matter came before the New Zealand council for discussion, apparently this had not been done, for in a subsequent letter from the council it was stated that the number of votes for and against the proposal had been ever.ly divided. No vote, however, had been recorded on behalf- of Taranaki. The scheme provided for the territorial grouping of the associations and the playing of a series of matches on the knock-out principle. The chief objection to' the scheme was that it involved too much travelling each season. It was pointed out that nothing would now be done in the matter until,‘'the next meeting of delegates, and whatever decision was arrived at would not aliect this season’s play.—The secretary was instructed to write to the council drawing attention to the fact that the Taranaki Association wished to record its vote against the proposal. It was resolved to take up ten £1 shares in New Zealand Cricket Ltd., a company that is financing the tour to England during the coming season of the New Zealand team. The president pointed out that it was practically certain the association would get its money back, perhaps with interest, and since Taranaki would possibly be the only minor association assisting the tour in the manner ' indicated it should stand the association in good stead' when Taranaki applied for overseas matches in the future. . - The chairman reported that at the informal request of the Waikato Association an invitation had been sent to Waikato to play a match. against Taranaki at New Plymouth at Easter. In view of the fact that Easter falls at tho beginning of April, and the cricket association's rights over the Pukckura Park ground terminate on March 31, it was decided to write to the sportsgfound committee asking whether it would be convenient to have the use of the sportsground for cricket at Easter. The annual North v. South Taranaki match for the Graham Cup was fixed to take place on the High School ground on January 31, when Pukekura Park , will be in use for an amateur athletic meetjng- • The secretary reported that the nett profit on the Taranaki-Wanganui Hawke Cup elimination fixture at New Plymquth had. been £1 12s 4d. . \ .
