CRENNATOWN WORKS PLEASINGLY (By “Moturoa.”) The New Plymouth tracks were in splendid order yesterday after Wednesday’s rain, and the sting was out of the going. ■ Most work was of a useful order, but the candidates for Ashhurst and Wellington were- sent along and most interest was centred in their efforts. # ♦ # * Melissa and Barlow’s two-year-olds were given easy tasks. All look very well. . . I ' • • « • Belle Star (Drinkwater) moved along freely over three furlongs, but was not out to make time and took 42 seconds for her task. She has improved with her- holiday racing. »** . * Ridgemount showed some of his old form when he'strode over half a mile in 52sec. Still, he will need to improve considerably on his displays during the holidays. ft "ft; ■ * ' * Spanish Prince and. Gibraltar were companions over a circuit and sprinted up the straight. ■ .’1 # • -ft ; • ft ' ft .Orapai (Davis) and The Swell (Drinkwater) began from the ten-furlong post and maintained an even pace throughout, taking 2min. 15 4-ssec. for the journey. Orapai did not finish as well as his companion, who did a great Ashhurst Cup trial. ■ # ft # • ft Omeo, looking very bright, was given pace work. # ft ' ft # Gold Dawn (Robinson) was anxious to do better when sent over half a mile in 55sec. # « ft ft Miss Chatter was given pace work. A similar task was allotted Singer, who appears to have benefited from his holiday racing. # « ft ft Easter Time (George) ran right away ( from Little Doubt (Davis) over half a mile in 52£sec. The two-year-old ran the first |hree furlongs in 38 2-ssec. and was eased up at the finish. • « ft o Lady Quex (George) was under a strong pull when she ran home from the two furlongs post in 25sec. ft' ft ■ # . « The Lapidary maiden (McLeod) gained an advantage of four lengths from Crennatown (Robinson) when they jumped off from the six-furlong peg, but there was only a length difference when the po?t was reached and Crennatown was going well within himself to cover the distance in Imin. 18sec. # # ft ft It was a splendid trial for Crennatown, who will contest the Highweight Handicap on the first day of the Wellington meeting, when he will be ridden by F. Foster. If he takes on the Douro Hack Cup on the second day C. W. Brodie will have the mount. # # # * The feature of the gallop was the great performance recorded by the Lapidary gelding. He has not been in work long, but is a great galloper. His first public appearance will be awaited with interest. ft ft ft « Royal Finance, who appears to have made a good recovery, worked freely on the inner. # # * * Traced has bluilt up considerably since P. Johnston took her in hand and is a nice cut of a filly. She was given a light task. * * * * Razor has gone back to his owner s farm. He did not have sufficient pace to win a hurdle race, but will be taken in hand again by Percy. Johnson with the view of racing him over country. » . . ft ft ft The consistent Joculator —Ermine gelding Winter Time won very comfortably in the first division of the 14.2 Handicap at the Kensington ponies on December 31. # ft ft * The Archiestown gelding Crennatown, who revealed his true form by winning in open company at the Stratford meeting, leaves New Plymouth for Wellington to-morrow morning. He has improved since the Stratford meeting, and the Highweight Handicap at Trentham on Tuesday gives him an excelelnt opTuesday gives him an excellent opcount.
