HAWERA MUNICIPALITY

CANDIDATES FOR NEXT ELECTIONS ■NO CONSIDERATION GIVEN YET While candidates are already in the field for the municipal elections in. a number of other New Zealand towns, the matter of selecting candidates for the Hawera Mayoralty and the borough council has apparently been given little thought in the town as yet. The present Mayor of Hawera (Mr. E. A. Pacey), when asked yesterday whether he intended seeking re-election, replied that as yet he had not gone into the matter. It was too early to make a statement. Similar replies were given by a number of present councillors when approached by a reporter. Or. W. G. Strange said he. was not sure what he would do but thought he would probably stand again. Cr. G. J. Bayley expressed himself as undecided, though he was doubtful whether he would again offer himself. Amongst other councillors interviewed both Crs. W. G; Walkley and W. G. Simpson said that they “had not got over the holiday feeling yet.” Crs. A. K. North, J. M. Townsend and A; K. Fyson were also undecided. It is not known what are the intentions of Crs. E. Morrissey and W. Reid. As far as could be ascertained no one outside the present council has been named as a possible aspirant for the Mayoralty or the council. NORTHERN BOWLERS’ TOUR. Eddie Cantor, star of “Whoopee,” the Samuel Goldwyn-Florenz Ziegfeld musical riot, which comes to the Opera House, Hawera, to-morrow at 2 p.m. for a season of three nights and three matinees, has a theory that an actor can usually count on giving a better performance in front of the microphone for a talking picture than he can on the •stage. “Whoopee” was his first fulllength talking picture to test this theory. “Haven’t I an imagination?” he asks when reminded that there is no stimulation from an audience, such as an actor usually counts on. “Can’t I just see the crowd before me? Can’t I hear applause? And anybody who ever tried to be funny in front of an audience which has gone cold on you—and that happens to everybody—ought to kiiow that the audience and the applause you can imagine for yourself is a lot more reliable than a theatre-full of people who may or may not be in the right mood. With my imagination I have the best kind of audience made to order for me just the way I like it.” Seats for “Whoopee’ may be reserved at Miss Blake’s. TO-NIGHT’S PROGRAMMES. Dorothy Mackaill, beautiful and talented screen actress, who portrays the leading feminine role in “Man Trouble,” current attraction at the Hawera Opera House finally to-night, likes to take long walks into the country and dabble among strange plants and geological specimens. She is a student of both botany and geology. Milton Sills, one of the most popular actors of the films, enacts the leading role in this Fox Movietone all-talking romantic drama adapted from Ben Ames Williams’ widely read magazine story, “A Very Practical Joke,” under the polished direction of Berthold Viertel.

“The Woman Racket,” Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer’s all-talking picture of New York night life, with Tom Moore and Blanche Sweet in the featured roles, is the attraction coming to-night and finally to-morrow night at the Grand Theatre, Hawera. The new play is a drama of night chibs and gangster life, with Moore as a policeman and Miss Sweet as a night club hostess. Glitterir ballets in spectacular night club scenes, and lilting song numbers, are contrasted with the gangster world ruling the night clubs from the background.
