“BEST NEWS FOR SOME TIME.”

Intimation that an additional grant of £l2OO had been made to the New Plymouth Unemployment Committee was received by the chairmaij, Mr. P. E Staintori, late yesterday afternoon from the Hon. S. G. Smith, chairman of the Unemployment Board. The money is to■be expended'on earthwork to be don'e in Westown. “This is the best news We have had for some time,” said Mr. Stainton to a News reporter. “The New Plymouth unemployment position is more acute at the present time than ever before. If the weather is favourable a start will be made on the work almost immediately. After the first few days there will be wbrk for upwards of 70 men at a time.” ■ ' The work would provide employment for only a portion of the present number of unemployed at a time, said Mr. Stainton, and a system of rotation, with preference to married men, would have to be followed. Registration books showing that the first levy of the unemployment tax has been paid will have to be shown when the unemployed apply for work. Where it can be proved that payment has not been made because of, undue hardship. the committee will do everything possible to make arrangements for the payment of the levy out of the fix st wages earned. Thus the men in question will not be prejudiced in procuring a share of the employment offering.
