VIRULENT GERMS

HOSPITAL PATIENTS DIE.

Edmonton, Dec. 10. Five deaths at Edmofidton General Hospital have been traced, after a week, to the turning off of a steam valve. All the patients were admitted for appendicitis and other operations. All died of virulent pneumonia. Scientists identified the germ paemolytical streptococci (a virulent germ which affects the red corpuscles of the blood) as the cause of! death. . The germ had been brought to the operating theatre from, other cases on linen because sterilisation was ineffective. This again was due to the closing of the valve of the steam-pipe which fed the sterilising chamber. The germs were not killed, merely warmed up. The chief engineer was discharged and the hospital is faced with a number of actions for damages to be brought by relatives of the dead.
