FEATURES OF LAST SEASON.

LESS CHEESE FROM CANADA.

Within recent years there has been a tendency for New Zealand and Australian dairy produce sold on the London market to pass through fewer hands, states W. Wcddel and Company, Limited, London, in its review of the season 1929-30. Whether or not this development will ultimately prove to be to the advantage of the industry remains to be seen, says the review. Comment is made regarding an apparent falling off. in the exports of Canadian cheese. Imports of Cariadian cheese into Great Britain during the year ■ ended June 30 last amounted to 36,396 tons, compared, with 43,862 tons in the previous year. This was the smallest quantity for many years, and indicated that the home consumption was increasing faster than production, pointing to the possibility that the export of cheese from Canada might stop altogether in the near future. The Argentine was stated to be in a somewhat similar position with regard to butter, as home consumption there was showing a very rapid increase every year. A factor which had played an important part in improving the quality of Argentine butter had been the great development in the establishment of separating stations or creameries,\as compared with home separation. This development was made possible by the good prices obtainable for quality casein, and, as all "Argentine creameries produced casein, they were in a position to pay attractive prices to induce the farmer to abandon home separation. It remained to be. seen whether the new development would continue now that casein prices had fallen.
