GREAT SPORTS CARNIVAL

TALENT AT NEW PLYMOUTH. Just over 100 competitors have entered for the aniateur athletic carnival to be held at Pukckura Park on Boxing night. The event whch has received this greatest number of nominations is the 880' yards run, in which 21 competitors are entered. Twenty ladies ate nominated' to compete m the ladies’ sprint events, and of this number. the lUwera club is represented by 10. Given good weather the success of the carnival is assured and there is no doubt that with the wonderful entries, especially invited talent present, some splendid competitiohs will be witnessed. Some particulars of the most outstanding athletes to participate are:—. : ... J. Fleming (Wellington), is brilliant over 100, 220 and 440 yards, and is .the present holder of 440 yards New Zealand championship, which he has won on three occasions. He has twice established a best New Zealand performance for 440 yards, doing the distance in 50 sscionds. He has been responsible for some memorable races against such noted visitors as J. V.- Scholz (U.S.A.), Lloyd Hahn (U.S.A.) and the wizard quartermiler, G. A. Golding (Australia), Already this season he has won several races, and ia in great form. Fleming is to meet Black, New Plymouth; in a special invitation 220 yards handicap in which only one other competitor, M. Prince, Eltham, will participate. F. Grose (Christchurch), is the best amateur cyclist seen in New Zealand for years, and at present holds all the New

Stan Lay, recently in New Plymouth, considers that - Sullivap. should have been at last British Empire Games, where he would have been difficult to defeat in the. hop, step and jump.
