A new -house, occupied for four months, was burned on the Waitara Road yesterday. The house was owned ■by Mr. A. Meston. The furniture of tho two front rooms was saved but of the property only three tanks of writer were left standing. All the family were in New Plymouth at the time except Mr. Meston', who was out cutting ensilage. No water was laid on and the house was outside the brigade’s area.

The fact that several South Island towns have framed by-laws requiring the read mudguard of bicycles to be painted whjte was mentioned at the meeting of the committee of the Taranaki Automobile Association last night. It was suggested the same procedure might be followed in North Taranaki, but Mr. R. Day poirited out that the making of. by-laws was a costly business. The association thought the matter was worth investigation and decided to approach the Borough Council.' The disparity in prices .of petrol between different towns was mentioned by Mr. A. S. Allen at a meeting of the Taranaki Automobile Association committee last night. The collection of information of the prices ruling in other towns for the benefit bf members, he thought, would be advisable. Members, would not then pass a town with cheaper prices without refilling and later have to purchase benzine at a dearer price. The executive is to consider the matter.

Appreciation Of the Friday evening entertainments the Rev. R. B. Gosnell and Mr. P. Stainton have regularly arranged at the New Plymouth prison was expressed last night by a prisoner. , He extended to Messrs Gosnell and Stainton the compliments of the season. On a charge of obtaining £6 ss. from Edgar Meredith, of New Plymouth, by means of a valueless cheque, Leslie Draper, alias Leslie Morgan Draper, appeared before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Wanganui on Thursday. In asking for a remand to New Plymouth, Detective J. Walsh said that in all the accused would be charged with 20 similar counts. The alleged offences had been committed in towns throughout the North Island. The application was granted and the accused is to appear at New Plymouth todaj_. Bail was not spqght.
