STOCK MARKET QUIETNESS NO IMPROVEMENT' IN VALUES. ALL CLASSES HARD TO SELL. No improvement in values ‘ for stock in Taranaki has been in evidence since ■last week, .Newton King, Ltd., reports. Little interest is. displayed ,in either paddock quotations orofferings at auction. Competition under the hammer is very dragging and all classes are hard to quit. . .Good entries of cow’ and heifer beef have been yarded during the week but a further decline in values has beer, noticeable especially for second quality cattle, and works buyers have been absorbing at reduced rates the good numbers of. Jersey and Jersey cross sorts that have come forward. Values ' for best fat bullocks range from £l2 to £l3, while good lighter weights are -being absorbed at from £lO 10s to £l,l. Best quality young 1 fait cows; realise from £8 It's to £9, good quality lighter sorts £7 to £7 10s, others £6 to £6 10s. -''-J Values in the. mutton section, are not Vady, prices’ showing ;a declining tendency. Requirements fof North■ Taranaki .consumption,; are being' fulfilled at practically - works rates, ; Best wethers .make- from 17s to. 18s, lighter Ids, beet young fat ewes 12s fid, others 10s to Ils. The reduction announced last week in the prices offering, by freezing companies for: fat lambs has’resulted in an easing in drafting ..operations, fatteners preferring to hold their supplies with the hope of evening matters by way of weight. . ‘ , .. . ' ‘'. Continued quietness is the order in the dtore ejieep fiction; store wethers being practically the only class in which sales’ of any account -are reported. Values, for 4-tooths range from 14s to 14s 6d, best two-tooths from 12s to 13s, and smaller sorts 10s to Ils. , It is difficult .to* arouse interest: in the store cattle section and private sales have been ' reduced to practically nil. Oddments, Continue to constitute, the yardings at Newton King’s fortnightly sales, and except for smalt numbers of young paddock cows the offerings for the most part, are absorbed by works buyers, but competition lacks keenness and values are reduced. Good conditioned .works cows mate from . £2 15s. to .£3 SS, while boners realise from. £!■ 10s to £2. Prices for good paddock cows range from £4 to £4 15s. J Fiftcen-month heifers are yarded in fair numbers but little interest’is displayed and few change hands. Good, quality 'fawns that have been mated realise up to, £5 ss/ while, crossbred cattle of size find a market at from £3 15s ,to £4. It ip, difficult to find' buyers for the other classes.; \

Dairy cattle are yarded in small numbut the disinterest is.continued in this section, which results in cattle being hard to quit. At ■ Lcppcrton on Tuesday a clearing sale 6f a small herd was conducted, but coiqlpetition was by no means kee’n, the top ' price , being • £9, The majority; changed hands at between £6 and. £7 ,10s. ~ '

There was a yafdihg of-about 50-jiigs at the New Plymouth haymarliet. yesterday and prices for weaners showed an advance. Larger .pigs remained, on •'a par. Quotations are: Weanerei IDs 6d, 20s, 21s 6d, ind 22s 6d; slips, 25s 6d;. small stores, 275; medium stores, 31s; porkers,’36s. .. ; ‘ MARKET, SLIGHTLY HARDENED. PURCHASES OF STORE SHEEP. 7 •'■ • The Farmers’ Co-operative Organisation Society of New Zealand, Limited, reports: There has been a slight hard-, cning tendency 'throughout our district during, the liist week, but whether due to tl\e fact that these were the last stock sales prior to. the Christmas holidays, or whether reflecting the hardening tendency reported in last week’s cables regarding butter and wool, >it is difllcu’t tp judge. It seems, however, as if prices were'somewhere near rock bottom, and a return of .confidence in all sections would: be. welcomed by the whole farming community. The large number of farmers who have this year consigned lambs on their own account are anxiously awaiting the results of 1 the firsts sales of new season’s lambs on the Smithfield market. ‘ .

Fat cattle.—A hardening tendency probably, due to the fact that there are no sales until after the New Year. Good quality cattle offered met with cbmpecition within defined limits. Best bullocks made £ll to £ll 10s, medium £9 15s to £10 ! ss, extra prime cows £8 15s to £9 15s, good cows £7 12s 6d to £8 ss, lighter sorts £6 to .£7. , : Fat sheep.—No change in the market from last week. Best forward cows and heifers £6, lighter £4 to £5, boners, cows,: £2 to £3 :15s, boners, bulls, £3 to £7 (according to weight), yearling heifers r.w. Jersey bull £4 10s to £5 5s (good, .medium sorts), hold-over heifers £2 7s 6d to £3 2s 6d, run cows with calves at foot £4 5s .to £5. Only odd sales are being made, in other sections. • ■ . L-.- . - Store sheep.—Market a little brighter, with a tendency, for a few fanners to purchase their annual requirements of ewes forward, delivery. Best station lines of 4-year ewes are quoting from 13s fid to 15s 6d and 5-year eiyes from lip .to 13s 6d, and a few sales have bfjen made between these ranges. A better inquiry for 2-tooth wethers and prices range from Ils for medium to 13s 3d for good 2-tooth wethers, 4-tooth wethers less inquiry and Wethers offering from 13s 6d f < 15 s according to quality. For 2-tooth ewes the market is brighter, with a good demand for immediate delivery, at about 18s to 19s, but sellers are few at the money offering. Sales were made at 18s 6d and 20s.

Dairy cows and. .heifers. —Odd lots .ire coming forward, and selling at • between £5 and £7 10s. ■ , PigstoThe market is brighter, with a good demand arid total 'clearances of offerings at all sales and some private sales of weaners in lots.
