WAITARA VALLEY ROAD
PROTEST MADE BY SETTLER.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETS.
A protest against the amount of money spent on straightening mahi roads while other urgent works were awaited by settlers was made by Mr. V. Larsen in a letter read at a meeting of the council of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last night.. The writer referred particularly to overdue formation of the Waitara Valley Road. There was only a track six miles in length to serve 3000 acres of farms on good papa land and about. 2000 acres of mixed rough country, . The settlers along. the trabk, he complained, had to pay rates on the same basis as if they were on a' metalled road. Mr. W. J.- Pehn said that 30 or 40 years ago some of the land jn question hud been taken up. by settlers' when it Was already loaded with the COst 01 loading. Farmers had actually been paying rent on the land saddled with this load but no road had been formed yet. He thought there was a much larger area of similar land than that mentioned in the letter. The matter was referred to the. public works committee for consideration. The chairman was appointed to represent the chamber on. the New Plymouth Tourist and Expansion League. •In reference to a report from the New Zealand Associated Chambers of Commerce regarding an attempt made to ensure the registration of unincorporated firms the chairman pointed out that it had been found that the difficulties out-
weighed the advantages and the matter was not being pursued. Messrs. A. H. Bone and J. D. Power were elected, to membership of the chamber, -
I Those present were. Messrs.;!/ M.Moss (chairman), J. R. McGregor, J. W. Darby, W. J. Penn, J. McNeill and F. W. Sama1 ford.
