CHINESE ARRANGES ESCAPE SIXTEEN MONTHS’ HARDSHIP UNSHELTERED AND CHAINED By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 11.30 p.m. Hong Kong, Dec. 17. A story of hardship and privation during sixteen months’ captivity by Chinese bandits is told by the Revs. Walter and Fischle, Basle Mission, who have reached here following their escape. Since their capture in August they have been subjected to most trying experiences and exposure, often being left on the ground all night long chained at the ankles, and being forced to march through the mountain fastnesses of Fukien.
The original ransom of £400,009 demanded was eventually brought down to £lOOO. A Chinese magistrate was responsible for their escape. He employed an intermediary who fraternised with the ‘ guards, : winning o ver two h( ‘ three men. A dramatic escape was made at night. The missionaries are now convalescing They intend to return to the mission station at Kaiying.
