MEW PLYMOUTH MEETING

THE BOXING DAY FIELDS WINNERS DO NOT LOOK DIFFICULT LOCAL HORSES SHOULD DO WELL. / MARJORAM BEST OF OUTSIDERS. / (By “Moturoa.”) The Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting for the past two or three years has not presented many difficult problems for the punters and generally the favourites have had a good spin. This year again it does not appear as if the bettors will be called upon to solve many knotty problems. Nevertheless, the average Christmas racegoer is content to pay expenses over the meeting and, given reasonably fine weather patrons of the popular New Plymouth gathering should enjoy a delightful outipg. Local stables again appear tg’ hold a strong hand and there will be lamentations if a fair number of winners are not credited to' New Plymouth stables each day.

There are some useful maidens in the Huatoki Plate and those most likely to run out seven furlongs are Miss Chatter, Arvada,. Double Red, Crennatown, Oraeo, Chief Savage and Wiuacre. The hack cup will be the mission of Crennatown, and that leaves-Chief Savage, Winacre and Omeo likely to be the hardest to beat, and Chief Savage should be the pick of this bunch. There will be a big field in the Borough Juvenile, and Royal Routine, Isa and Tradesman are a trio of smart three-year-olds at the top of the list. The handicap generally favours the two-year-olds and the Morn and Easter Time—Gibraltar brackets will find favour with the bettors. These youngsters have been galloping exceptionally well at New Plymouth and promise to give the older horses a good go. Then there are Forceful and Summertime from Hawera, who are well thought of. The final gallops should ‘give some indication as to the eventual result, but the brackets read as wqll as anything at present and a preference ie expressed for Mrs. Graham’s pair. . Taken all through, the jumpers engaged in the Raliotu Hurdles are a fair lot. 'Royal Damon won very comfortably at Waverley and is sure to be better for his two races at Feilding. Goblin Market is a likely. improver and goes very fast for a while. Moerangi is a useful hunter, but he will find this company much harder. Evening Hero shaped very well for, a novice when he ran Easterly to a neck at Woodville, and he is favourably handicapped. Lupin Abbey and Waltzer have shown form over the battens and Razor may be the best of those on the minimum. While Royal Damon ■ is the early fancy, the top-, weight will be set a task to beat Evening Hero and. Goblin Market. Reserved for the Stewards’ Handicap, Orapai would be a warm favourite, but he is booked for the set weight race. Callapat goes fast and has been working very well during the past few weeks. Then there, are the two Auckland three-year-olds, Tradesman and Grand Spirit.

Both must be given great chances and will be in demand if started. Biflex is a useful sort and so is Tentcall, though the latter seems to be consistently unlucky. Among the lightweights Merry Lu, Lady Lulu arid Qiiinola have all shown pace, though Quiriola may be the pick of this bunch. At this stage Tradesman, Grand Spirit and Quipola must all be given good chances.. - ■■There is always keen interest in the main'event of the day, the Christmas Handicap. The Swell 'heads the list ■ with 9st and in such a field is not overburdened. He is very well just now and looks all the better for his trip to Melbourne. Marjoram; who won, the Atiawa Hack Cup here last Christmas, has recorded some great mile gallops at Trentham, and it looks as if he is nearly back to his best form. He is .reported to be a certain starter, and a reproduction of his best form would make him very difficult to beat. Melissa, if started in this race, in preference to the Flying Handicap, would possess an undeniable chance. In /her recent races she has been staying on well and, with her superior' pace, could pick this field up at any stage of the race. Old Yoma cannot be despised. He has run some good races at New Plymouth and in the spring he showed a fair amount of pace at Wanganui. He is certainly the best stayer in the field; Orazone has won this race two years in ; succession, but she is reported to have gone amiss and will probably not be accepted for. The distance should beat Bonogne, and Belle Star is an unlikely starter. Royal Finance would be the pick of the lightweights, but her misoion has not yet been decided upon. Summed up, The Swell, Melissa, Marjoram and Yoma look easily the best in the field, but at present I would express a preference for Marjoram. At this time iof the year hack cup races are very popular and there is sufficient talent in the Atiawa Handicap to make a fine race. The handicapper rates Royal Finance rather highly when her performances are considered, but there is no doubt the Paper Money mare is good. Spearform won at Wayerley, and repeated the performance in better company at Feilding, where ehe beat a rattling good field on the second day.' Joyspear has won some fair races and the Greyspear gelding is very consistent. Latakia is “iffy” and Banbridge is also in and out. Omeo is an interesting entrant, and should run a fair race, but Monalpff should beat him. ■Singer is hardly ready yet, but Calamine and Crennatown are. Crennatown finish eda close third to Spearform at Feilding and is now meeting the mare on 171 b .better terms. Royal .Finance will probably wind up favourite if started, but in her absence Spearform, Joyspear and Crennatown all read well, the i latter probably being the beet favoured

by the weights. The Tikorangi Hack Stakes is a setweight race. Orapai, Royal Routine, .Silver Rule and Moutoa Treasury will all carry 9st, while, the remainder are on the Sst mark. Silver 'Rule has not raced for a couple of seasons and will probably not be ready. Royal Routine goes fast for five and Moutoa Treasury is more than useful. The remainder hardly appear to be up to this class and will not be greatly considered. On paper Cfapai reads like a very safe bet, and his brilliancy out from the barrier may stand him in good stead. He is certain to start in this race, and perhaps Royal Routine may be next in demand. The first day’s programme concludes with the Flying Handicap, for which eleven have been weighted. Ridgemount, which won last year, is very fit, but . he will find his task a harder one this time. Melissa so comfortably beat the sprinters at Waverley that she appears to be particularly well treated. She is a good quality mare and was never better than she is at present. Marjoram is almost certain to start in the longer race, but Te Atiawa, who runs isome of his best races on this course, must be considered. However, he has

been racing a long way below form this season. Chief Link has so far failed to, reproduce his promising two-year-old form, but it would be unwise to condemn him yet. He has the breeding behind him and it may be that the heavy tracks he raced on in the spring were against him. Old Bonogne is not ; altogether out of the picture. Ho ran (.Wo wood races at Feilding. Green Linnet <lisappoihted at Waverley, but she should do a lot better than that. Gold Dawn may not bo forward enough to show her best form, but Royal Finance would not be outclassed if started heic. Summed up, it would seem that Ridgemount, Melissa, Chief Link and Bon; owne will b& the hardest to beat, but it will probably be found that the majority will be in favour of Melissa, and they'may not be very far wrong.

The acceptances for all events on the firs,t day of the meeting close with the* secretary, Mr. C. B. Webster, at 9 o’clock to-night, and on their appearance the bettors. should know more about the missions of the various early favourites. STRATFORD RACE .MEETING. Horse racing at any time makes a powerful appeal to a large section of the community, but when the picnic side of the sport is kept to the forefront the appeal embraces a larger proportion of the community. Very keen interest is being taken in the Awakino Beach Racing Club’s annual meeting, which will take place to-morrow. A programme of eight races has been arranged, including a number of events forestation hacks, and the friendly rivalry that is evinced adds greatly to the zest of the sport. Eor the Awakino Cup, of six furlongs, which carries with it the Drysdale Cup.

there are five entries, but as they are an even lot a very close race should result. My Hero, Nation and Te Mana have performed creditably on the beach in the past and they should bo prominent. The Flying Handicap also has drawn an even field of four and there should be very little between them at the end of the five furlongs, as Han-

dicapper K. Black appears to have done! his work well. All the other races are> post entry and all should provide good fields, particularly the Ladies Brace]e' which carries a trophy valued at £5 ss, and the Piri Piri Hack, which carries a cup donated by Mr, C. Pope, together with a silver whip for the rider. . ■ 1,
