EPISCOPAL MANOEUVRES.
Tomleti, who was- the best, chess player in th© club, then demonstrated - a number of curious problems and puzzles' on the board, but as I am not writing for. those who understand the game I will only give one little example that ■requires no previous knowledge of the moves. In. the diagram we-find fourteen Bishops placed on the board. I need only say. that a Bishop moves any distance in a straight diagonal line ©f one colour, and if two of these happen to be on the same diagonal they are understood to attack each other. Thus it will be found that every Bishop at present attacks at least one other Bishop except the one at the top, which makes no attack. Now Tolnlett’s puzzle was to move as few Bishops as possible in a straight line along one of its diagonals to a new position so that not one of the Bishops on the board will be attacking any other Bishop. Hopper noticed that some of the men were, for the sake of convenience, using ■Pawns or other pieces instead of Bishops. He protested that this must be wrong, but it was pointed out to him that actual shapes of the pieces make no difference whatever so long as they move and behave in a proper episcopal manner. Tommy: “Look, Mummy, there is Daddy going along the street.” Mother: “Which side ’is he walking on?” Tommy; “’Both sides.’’ «> » • e & ‘ Dietitian: “A few leaves of lettuce without oil, a bran cracker and a glass of orange-juice. Stick to that and your weight will come down.” Woman: “Well, that’s fine, Doctor. Now do I take that befor© or after meals?”
