WARNING TO SHOPKEEPERS
ILLEGAL TRADING ON SUNDAYS. A warning to shopkeepers that, they were liable to a fine of £5 if they sold goods on,'a Sunday and allowed them to oe consumed off the premises, was issued by the magistrate, Mr. R. ,W. Tate, at the New Plymouth court yesterday. Wiliian Humphries, a confectioner' in New Plymouth, was fined 10s., wifh ‘cost's amounting to 10s., on a charge of keeping open a shop on Sunday, • December 7, for the purpose of Selling goods. “The law is a very old ope,” Said Mr. Tate. “If people are going to keep open on a Sunday they must find out what they can and what they cannot do. They may sell refreshments for consumption On the premises, but not for consumption outside.”
In reply to the police statement that Humphries bad sold Some boxes of chocolates to some small boys, Mr. L. Hughes, appearing. for the defendant,, said the boys wore to come before the Children’s Court on a charge of theft of money, It was in the course of their investigations that the police had interviewed the. accused and it had been in giving what help he could to the police he had made a statement admitting the sale of goods on ft S.Unday. All shops, and park kiosks of the type sold; ice cream which was. not consumed on the premises., It was evident that a warning was necessary to shopkeepers so that they might know how far they could go.-, Senior-Sergeant MeCrorie said-rhe.- had warned Humphries several times and a conviction had been entered against him in .1927. All the shopkeepers had been warned. ■ . -.
