NATIVES RIOT AT DURBAN

Durham natives have been threatening for some yeans- to burn their passes on the anniversary day of .the defeat of Dingaan, which is observed' as a public holiday. This year there was no threat of a demonstration but a crowd of 1000 gathered outside Durban. A printed dodger stated: “This is the day for putting the passes in hell!” ■An inflammatory speech was made by a native who announced himself as organiser of the Communists. It was decided the natives should form up and march to the tdwn in order to join natives from the docks.
The Inspector of Police forbade the march. The natives defied tlie order, whereupon fifty police armed with pickhandles charged. .They, were met with a fusillade of stories'. One native was killed and seven, including the organiser, were seriously, injured.
