Taverner} ' to-day. Speakers urged that 14s a day was too high a- Standard to pay .on relief works and induced, men with a! “tired feeling 0 to join the jranks of the unemployed.’ x . Mr. Taverner caid; that.;the setting of the standard of wage ; was a matter-Of Government policy. He would place . the representations of the deputation, -j before the Cabinet. There were something like 10,000 men out of work and work had to be rationed. Single meh Jiad to be put off and replaced by married men. This was not a nice thing to have to do as the single men had to live. The Government was planning big development, works. = ; A voice: I hope it' is not railway extension work!
The Minister: No, it is not a railway extension. He added ' that he hoped in the near future to be able to make a statement on the matter.
