CHAMPION CALVES

FINALS JUDGED AT ELTHAM

HIGH QUALITY ANIMALS SHOWN.

PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. The judging of 'calves reared under the South Taranaki Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs, competitions was concluded yesterday when the prize-winners of the various groups assembled' at Taumata Park, Eltham, for '.the championship, awards. There was a large attendance of children, parents and the public, including the president, Mr. E,_' J, .Betts; and tGe secretary,. Mr. E. K. Cameron, of the South Taranaki Provincial Farmers’ Union, and representatives of the farming community from a wide ar?a'. Many, members of the union executive and all the judges who had judged at the different schools, were present. ~ In the morning heavy - showers; made the conditions unpleasant, but later the weather cleared.

The display of calves was considered a revelation of high/quality ’ animals. The judges- were, surprised at the fine types which came forward and, they, were highly eulogistic of the good work s accomplished by the clubs? . The judging was supervised by Mr. Rod Syme, and assisting, were Mr. J. W. Palmer, of-the Department of Agriculture, and members of the Farmers’ Union. The judging of condition was donp by Messrs.- H.‘ R; Denize, J. D. Scott' (Jersey-Ayrshire), , A. T. Wills and W. McL’Dowie (Friesian-Short-. horn). Dairy type was judged by Messrs. F. Hoskin (Jersey-Ayrshire) and A. D. Johnson (Shorthorn-Eriesian)., while the pedigree classes were judged by Messrs. H. Wren (Jerseys) arid H, Hodge (Friesians); ’ • . \\, RESULTS OF JUDGING. ~ The first 'place for condition in the Jersey-Ayrshire class was won by. 'Vera Stallard (Bird Road), with Olive Cleaver (Eltham). runner-up. In the Shbri-horri.-Fnesian class Lyall Stallard (Bird Road) - and Ivy. Major (Toko) tied for first place, ; W. /Shearer (Okaiawaj and Dorothy , Gable -dividing honours for second, place; . •' •; • Im dairy type for Jersey-Ayrshires Myra Wren (Tokaora)’ secured i-the 1 champion a ward, and Lyall Stallard(Bird Road) the championship for Shorthorri-Friesians.
