BEST SEASON FOR TROUT

ANGLING IN SOUTH TARANAKI MAiNY. FINE BASKETS OBTAINED.

Trout fishing in South Taranaki streams has never been as good as during tho present season, and anglers have been surprised at the size and numbers offish caught to date. Trout of four, five and six pounds have been landed in plenty, and, in. the , words of a, prominent enthusiast, ‘‘even the worst of our fishermen have been amply satisfied with their baskets.”

Mr'.- C. Davis, Manaia, who already “aas 148 fish' to his credit this season, recently landed a sturdy 84 pounder. Such encouraging results are greatly to the credit of the Hawera Acclimatisation Society, which for many years has pursued a policy of systematic .liberations of fry and young fish. A total of; 13,700 trout has been distributed by the society in the. various South Taranaki etreams during, the past few days. A further 25,000 will be liberated' at a later date. , -

The work has been carried out sq far as follows:—lMr| A. Allan (Pihama), 500 in the Punehu Stream; Mr. J..,Webby (Riverlea), 500 in the Mangawhero; Mr, E. Drake (Okaiawa) and party, 1100 in the streams along the Skeet Road-Otakeho, Mangawhero and Dunn’s Creek; Mr. L. Cleaver (Te Ngiitu), 500 in a dam on tho Inaha; Mr. C. M. Buckworth and Mr. Miller (Hawera), 650 in the Waingongoro above the pipe, bridge; by the, executive of the society,' 5000' in the streams along the ElthamOpunake Road, 1000 each in the Kaupokonui, Mangawheroiti, Mangawhero, and Otakeho, arid 500 each in Slaughterhouse'Creek and Dunn’s; Creek, 1000 in the Waingongoro above the power house - dam, 4500 .in the streams crossing the South Road arranged by the secretary, 500 in Waingongoro, 1000 each in Inaha (Mr. M. Bourke), Waiokura (Mr. J. Silvester and party), Ka.upokonui and Otakeho, All report the little fish were in first-class order.

Tho curator (Mr. Jf Miller) reports 'that tho-young'pheasants are growing .fast.'and .are strong birds'. In tribute to the memory of a comrade in service, a party of members of the South Taranaki Returned Soldiers’ Association attended the funeral at Hawera yesterday afternoon of the late Mr. James A. Smart, whose death, following a short illness, occurred at the Hawera Hospital on Sunday. Service at the Hawera cemetery was conducted by the Rey. R. E, Evans and the pall-bearers were six ‘ex-servicemen • of the war period, Sergeant-Major A. E. Stevens, N.ZjP.'S., Messrs M. R. Jones of the South Taranaki R.S.A.), L. I. Martcr, D. Strachan, S. N. Reece and D. Murphy. Mr. Smart enlisted at Invercargill and proceeded to the front with the 14th Reinforcements. He was posted to one of the Otago Infantry Battalions and subsequently served as a quarter-master sergeant. Following his return from . the war he resided at the Chatham Islands for some years, after which he came to Taranaki "and for the past year had ■been employed by Mr. D. Murphy, Manaia.i He was not married but had relatives at Winton, Southland, where his mother resides, and also in other parts of that province. Mr. J. C.
