ELECTRIC LIGHT SPORTS
NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB EVENT. The executive of the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Chib has left nothing io chance in completing its arrangements for the opening-of the up-to-date, lighting system at the- Pukekura Park: sports ground. The opening takes place on Boxing Night.and the executive is'keenly looking forward to' the occasion when it will present the best programme of athletics ever' seen in New Plymouth. Followers of this excellent class of recreation will be treated to a full programme which includes numerous sprint and long distance races, several cycling events, • bwo hurdle events, javelin throwing and two sprints'for the ladies.. To ensure success and keen competition the club has specially engaged, two outstanding athletes. . They, are Jack Fleming, Wellington, who is the present New Zealand champion 440 yards runner and holder of New Zealand records for the distance, and F. J. Grose, Christchurch, who is the present New Zealand champion amateur cyclist. On the last three occasions in which he has competed in the New Zealand championships, although only young, Grose has outclassed his opponents and is so brilliant in the cycling branch that he is booked- to compete in Australia' early next year. Other champions who will compete include Stan Lay, Hawera, holder of the British Empire javelin throwing- championship, George Sullivan, New Plymouth. h/p, step and jump champion. The committee is also negotiating to get Miss T. Kench, Wellington, the New Zealand lady champion athlete, to compete at the meeting.
