UNPRECEDENTED FIGURES
NEW ZEALAND'S UNEMPLOYED. HOPE FOR HELP FROAJ BOARD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. There was an increase of 036 over the previous week in the number of.-unem-ployed registered In Ne'w Zealand for the week ended on December 1, according to a statement issued by \the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S. G. Smith. Last week’s total. was 8038. Of these 4088 had dependents. ):l -- J /- ', ~ Details of the registrations at the labour bureaux and post offices arc:—Auckland, 1343 with dependants and 986 without dependants; Wellington, 657 and 543; Christchurch, 874 and 515; Dunedin, 1 313 and 234; Invercargill, 102 and 82. The totals for the five centyes, ■With the figures for the previous week in parentheses, are:—Auckland 2329 (2258), Wellington 1200 (1194), Christchurch 1389 (1089), Dunedin 547 (582), Invercargill 184 (189). Evidence is again provided-by these figures of the fact that hundreds of men are registering now that the" Unemployment Board has started its operations in the, hope of receiving direct assistance. The increase in the registrations in a fortnight has been 1270, This figure is unprecedented since records of registrations were first kept. The Unemployment Board has been, working long hours all ,this week and it sat day and night to-day. As the activities extend it promises to be faced wiith an increasingly difficult task and the co-operation of* local bodies and committees will be urgently required. Over 50 applications have already been made by local bodies for subsidies under the board’s scheme by which up to £25,000 will be made available for Christmas relief.
