" . t HALL CAINE AND THE TAHITI.

The ill-fated Tahiti was formerly the Port KiilgstOfi, and at tile time of the Tahiti disaster Mr. T. E. Corkill, Wellington, remembered hii fellow-countfy-taiii, Sir Hall Callie, writing “The Crhise of the Port Kingston.” Mr. Corkill forwarded copies of the wiekly paper, Auckland Weekly News, containing descriptions of the disaster, to the distinguished author, and Sir William has how replied: “Dear Mr. Corkill,—Your letter of August 22 Was hafided to mo bn Suu* d»y by rhy sister-in-law. I hasten to thank you for your kind ihduglitfolness ih sending me the .paper, by which I aift enabled to identify in the ill-fated Tahiti my old friend the Port Kingston, the background of my book Of 1967, entitled “The CrUise of the- Port Kingston.’ Whhn/I redd the thrillihg account of thb Ship’S pfoud effort to keep ftflOat Until Kelp was at hand, I had no idea that this Tahiti Was a vessel so closely interwoven in my own personal experiences. During the strain at Jamaica following the earthquake, her decks were like an operating, theatre. And, after a week of such service; she brought away all who cared, or had the means of paying for the voyage home. Now , she has gohe to her eternal rfest, and I feel that something has gone out of men when I think of her reposing in the bosom of many waters of the. farstretching Pacific Ocean. 1 hUve long lived’ in the hope of setting eyes on yotir beautiful land, as to which my dom tdf--Haskiiis, of Ham Stead, by name, a native of NeW Zealaild—is eVer ready to expand, and justly so, I am convinced. All good wishes and best thanks.—lV. Ralph Hall Caine.”
