The current rates payable last year were £680144 12s 2d as compared with the £70,55*0 14s 8d payable this year. The sum outstanding at the same period last year was £3750 as-compared with £5605 14s 4d This year. It is expected, however, that s when the iir.hil is cleared this morning the balance outstanding will bo considerably reduced. Under the circumstances, said Mr. G, V. Matthews, borough the'-posi-tion was considered very satisfactory. Further satisfaction was to be found that of the arrears on last year’s rates amounting to £561 3s sd, the borough has received £420 4s, leaving the small balance outstanding of £l4O 19s sd. The rates came in with a steady flow all day. The expedition of the ..borough staff is indicated by the fact that with the record takings of. £17,587 in one day, the counter closed at 4.30 p.m., the balance was struck at 4.35 p.m. .and ,all . the cash was lodged in the bank at 4.45 p.m. ■ Detailed figures are:—Total current rates, £70,550 14s Sd; arrears from previous year, .£56) 3s sd; ; total, £71,111 ISs Id.
