WORK OF THE TOWN BOARD.' ’’(From ,Our Own Correspondent.) t On Monday evening the monthly m eetiiig of the Town Board was held. Present: Messrs. A. J. Brennan (chairman), C. H. Smith, D. Mdurie and W. Gunson. ’ ? ,'■ The foreman (Mr. J. D® C'astrp) reported on the month’s work done by ■the staff .and that the new Oolfix sprayer was doing the work on the footpaths' satisfactorily and at a reasonable cost. ■ The board decided to order a truck load of Oolfix material, thus making a considerable saving as compared with purchasing in small lots. The Elfhara Borough Council wrote asking for support to the proposal to settle unemployed on unoccupied farm lands. The board decided to support the scheme outlined by the Mayor of Eltham. ? ■ ■ The Opunake Harbour Board was' granted permission to take water pipes over the Town Board’s property to the Harbour Board’s reserve. - -; ■ Mr.' J. S. Smith was granted a further lease of the board’s cottage. . It was agreed the board,could not at present take advantage of the unemployment subsidy offer. ' . . Messrs. Brennan, Raynor, Hammond and' the clerk were appointed a committee to meet the Egmont County Council’s committee and discuss the matter .of heavy traffic fees. The board agreed to assist the Retailers’ Association in regard to the special Christmas street lighting display. Improvement of the garden surrounding the war memorial was authorised. The ranger reported that during thtmonth seven cows and eight horses Were impounded; 10 cows and six horses were released on the highways. The board decided to inform the ■Automobile Association of the free parking place for cars on the recreation grounds, and to ask. the association to erect a notice board in the vicinity, the board being willing to assist the association in making the site a convenient one. ' The Surf Club’s concert on Monday night, promoted by Mr. and Mrs. Antoni Bonetti, in the New Theatre, was well' attended. Over 50 juvenile pupils from Hawera took part in the concert. The instrumental playing and the singing of the juveniles was a special treat to the young people of the district and will .create an interest in music.' The president •of the- Surf Club thanked Mr. and Mrs. Bonetti for providing an excellent programme and the public for patronage. After the concert the visitors were entertained to supper in St, Patricks Hall. A dance was also held. Arrangements have been made'for the Girl Guides and Brownies to attend the rally at Hawera on Saturday, Decem-ber-13.
