AEROPLANE LANDING SITES

TARANAKI-WELLINGTON ROUTE. • SEVERAL SUITABLE FIELDS. ■Recent inspections of prospective landing grounds on the New Plymouth to Wellington air route have revealed the existence 'of splendid sites situated close to towns, where aeroplanes could land and take off without risk. That no difficulty should be experienced in securing suitable grounds was the opinion expressed by Major G. A. Cowper to a Daily News representative. What was required was a level stretch of ground with lengthy runs and free of surrounding obstructions so that there would be no interference with landing or taking off in any direction. During flights between Hawera and Wellington he had .selected from the air sites near Waverley, Marton and Fcxton,-ground inspections of which had confirmed the opinions he had formed from the air. At patea there was a good site available on' Mr. C. R. Honeyfield’s property on the, main road, about 2J miles east of. Patea. At Wanganui and Feilding there would be the club aerodromes. The proposed. field at Waverley .is situated on Mr. G. Walkinton’s property, on the main road about 3J miles east of Waverley. The area,is of between 80 and 100 acres,, almost the entire surface of which is level. The field, is bounded by low hedges,_ with the exception of a small plantation of gum trees at the eastern end. ,In the direction of the prevailing \wind there is an excellent ran of 600 to 700 yards, while similar and shorter runs can be obtained in'other directions according to the direction of the wind. At Wanganui the airport at Castlecliff will be used. Work is being carried out at present on the field which, when completed, will be an excellent landing ground. About half a mile from Marton a eplendid level site on Mr. Morrison’s property has. been selected. On this field runs of from 400 to 500 yards can be obtained, with extensions available up to 600 or 700 yards. A flat ■ stretch of land with a hard surface 2J miles seaward from Foxton has been selected and should prove aii' admirable field. HAWERA SPORTS MEETING. ATHLETES AT SHOWGROUNDS. •. Lyof Tolstois 'poignantly tragic drama of the Russian officer who, lured by the nomadic call of Gypsy ancestry, deserts his wife and family, gives the opportunity for some fine acting to John Gilbert in the all-talking picture “Redemption,” which opened at the Hawera Opera House yesterday and will be shown again to-night and to-mor-row night. The supporting cast, including Renee Adoree, Conrad Nagel and Eleanor Boardinan, is unusually strong, and it is from the acting point of view that the picture excels. The supportinn- programme is exceptionally strong, including a, Broadway show in colour, ' “International Revue.” These colour reviews are proving popular, and. this is certainly bright, with beautiful settings and talented people each contributing to a widely varied and delightful 'programme. The news reels depict world happenings of interest and “Big Top Champions” shows circus animals being trained to that high pitch of intelligence for which they are renowned. The sagacity of the ponderous elephants is really remarkable. The ' box plan is al Miss Blake s.
