SALAMAN FOUND GUILTY
SENTENCED TO TWELVE MONTHS

Fqupd guilty of manslaughter, the Indian herbalist Abraham Wally Mahomed Salaman at the New Plymouth Supreme Court yesterday was sentenced by the Chief Justice, S;r Michael Myers, to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour. The tri^l.commenced on Friday. The jury added to its finding of guilty a recommendation of mercy. Though the recommendation was not stated .aloud when the verdict was returned by the jury, it was endorsed on the indictment. ’ The case for the Crown concluded on Saturday, and yesterday morning was occupied with the addresses of the Crown Prosecutor and counsel for the defence, and the summing-up by the Chief Justice. The jury retired at 2.45 p.m., and after deliberating for two hours 40 minutes brought in its verdict at 5.25 p.m.
