ROOM FOR COAL COMPANIES
MOKAU DIRECTQR’fS EFFECT OF RAILWAY FREIGHTS. (By Wire,—Special to News). Auckland, Last Night.. A ireply to Mr. W. D. Holgate’s statements regarding protection for investors and railways freights in his presidential address at the annual meeting of the New' Zealand Coalmine Owners’ Association was made this morning by Mr. J. Christoffel, a director of the newly formed Mokau Collieries, Ltd., and Mr, B. J. Young, sales manager of the. same firn.. Referring, to Mr. Holgate’s statement that the Government should refuse to issue any further' licenses to mine coal until it was satisfied that there was room for additional compani s to operate without serious loss, Mr. Young claimed that there was room for a coal mine in the Taranaki province, where the Mokau mine is situated, and it would sppply Taranaki province. In reference to Mr. Holgate’s' statement regretting the proposed action of the Government to raise freights on coal Mr.'Young said that should freights be raised it would-be of increased value to the combined Taranaki coal mining companies and would assist them in marketing their coal throughout Taranaki at' a much cheaper rate than at present.
