TARANAKI BANDS CONTEST

DEMAND FOR PART OF PROFIT. MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE. The demand for 10 per cent, of the net proceeds of tlie Taranaki bands conics at Eltham early in the year was received from the North Island Brass Bands Association at a meeting of the executive of the Taranaki Brasss and lipe Bands Union at Stratford last night. The chairman, Mr. P. Skoglund, explained that he had written to the president of the association pointing out that though the union had made a profit from the Eltham contest, £2O of that profit had gone Jo pay the loss on the previous contest at New Plymouth, where the contest unfortunately had had to be held on a day that was not a half-holiday. Furthermore, the union desired to build a fund so that it could afford to hold a contest in every Taranaki town that had a band, and at the same time be able to meet any loss that might attend' contests held in the smaller towns. The president of the association had replied that the demand had been made as the result of a motion on district contests carried at the last annual meeting of the association. He had suggested 0 that the question might be left in abeyance until the annual meeting, to which the union could forward a remit to rescind the motion from which the demand had originated. In the event of such a remit being successful the matter whether the percentage pf the proceeds from the Eltham contest should be forwarded to the association could be reviewed.

The suggestion was adopted. Letters from the Eltham Pipe Band were read indicating that the band still refused to join the union. No motion was passed; but the band will not be able to compete at the contest at Hawera in the third week of March unless the affiliation fees are paid, it was pointed out. Names of the judges proposed to judge the pipe bands at the contest will be submitted to the bands in order that their choice of a judge may be ascertained by post, an attempt to hold a meeting of the four bands concerned having failed. Mr. W. Hawkins (Hawera) reported that the Mayor (Mr. E. A. Pacey) would s. n call a meeting at which a contest committee would be set up. CROQUET MATCHES AT STRATFORD AVON DEFEATS ELTHAM.
