NEW ZEALAND PRESIDENT INTER-CLUB COMPETITIONS. NEW PLYMOUTH HANDICAP EVENTS. (By “Half-Volley.”) ;' ' A player who represents the highest traditions of the game, Air. A. G. Wallace, Waverley, well deserved the. honour conferred upon him when elected to the office as president of the New Zealand Lawn Terinis Association this year. For more than a quarter of a century he lias been a prominent figure in competitive tennis and has also taken an, active part in its administration. - As a player he has an enviable record. 'ln .1913 he annexed the New Zealand singles championship, and the same year, partnered with C. J. Dickie, he won the New Zealand doubles championship for the See ond time. This - combination first captured the doubles title in 1907. He has many times? represented Taranaki in inter-provincial matches and against touring teams and has also represented New Zealand on various occasions. Due in a large measure to his fine sportsmanship lie, was selected to captain the New -Zealand team which toured New South Wales in, 1926 and without fear of contradiction it can lie said tliat no better man could have been chosen to capture and retain the confidence of a young touring team than A. G. Wallace. Always fit he was a fine example to young players .and many owe the improvement in their game to advice received from him,

Another prpminent figure in New Zealand tennis, whose services in the interest of the game have recently received recognition, is Air. W. J. Alelody, Wellington. For the active part he has taken in the' promotion and encouragement of junior tenuis in the Dominion Air. Alelody has been elected a life member of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association. A similar honour has been conferred upon Mr. C. G. Swinburne;

SOUTH TARANAKI' COMPETITIONS.

The commencement of the South Taranaki inter-club competitions which was arranged for last Saturday had to -be abandoned owing to the inclement weather. It is now hoped to begin the series to-morrow. '3o men have already entered but so far the ladies’ entries are below’ expectations; It is the. intention of . the committee to •commence the matches next week so that they may be finalised before Christmas.. GROUPING OF ASSOCIATIONS. The council of the New,Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, which meets next Thursday, will have before it a number of important and probably controversial matters. Several notices of motion have been given dealing with the following: — Time for holding the quarterly meetings to enable outside delegates to attend without undue loss of time; two regarding junior tennis; the levy to be paid .by affiliated associations for the current season; that competition' for the Anthony Wilding Memorial Challenge Shield and the Kathleen Nunncley Casket be controlled by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. The competitions are now controlled by the association which holds the trophies which at the present time is Wellington. The proposal is to divide the associations into groups as follow: No. 1, North Auckland,. Thames Valley, Waikato. No. 2, Auckland. No. 3, Taranaki, Wanganui and Manawatu. No. 4, Poverty Bay, East Coast, Hawke’s Bay and V» airarapa. No. 5, Wellington. ’ No.- G, Marlborough, Nelson, .West Coast, No. 7, Canterbury No, 8, South Canterbury, North Otago, Otago, Southland. No. 9, Maori. Association. - . .

It is proposed that, the teams be composed each of four players as at present, and that the matches in both competitions be played during one fixed week in each year. It is also proposed to transfer the sum of £5O to an account to be known as the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield .and Kathleen Nunneley Casket competitions account. All net profits from the’competitions to be paid into this account, and transport expenses

of visiting teams to be guaranteed by the association and paid out of this account. When the- account will permit, it is proposed that an allowance for accommodation expenses be made to visiting teams. - - ■
