FLOWERS AT WAITARA

ST, JOHN'S ANNUAL SHOW BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY OF BLOOMS. ROSES PARTICULAR FEATURE. The interior of St. John's Hall, Waitara, yesterday presented beauty and a blaze, of colour for- the opening of the ninth annual rose show and sale of work under the auspices of, St. John’s Church. That such a wealth of blooms could, be benched despite the boisterous weather was a testimony to the care bestowed upon their culture by growers not' only in Waitara and Tikorangi but in the districts as far as New Plymouth and Eltham. Roses made a very strong class, the championship going to J. Taylor, Fitzroy, who secures the rose bowl presented by Mr. S. D. George. Mrs. A. Rowe, Waitara, and R D. Leighton, Fitzroy, secured the points prizes in roses. Cut flowers were a feature, among the most striking perhaps being the amaryllis. Mrs. E. Jones, Waitara, secured tjie points prize. The decorative section was another strong one and there was keen competition f6r the points prize, Miss I. Foreman securing it by a point with ‘Miss L. Limmer" runner-up. The home industries attracted keen competition, Mrs. A. E. .Vickery securing the points trophy presented by Mr. C. W. Gribbon as'well as several other trophies. Fancy work attracted good entries, beautiful/ work being displayed. Miss O. Dring won the points prize. Owing to 'the proximity of the examinations there were no entries from school children in the hand-work sections but there were strong entries in the juvenile decorative and juvenile cookery classes. • Among displays on exhibition was < ne by Mr. L. N. Johnston, its special feature being some blue poppies shown for the first time in New Zealand. Messrs. Duncan and Davies, New Plymouth, also had a. characteristic display of flowers and flowering shrubs, including native plants. The organisation of the show was splendid. Stewards with Mrs. W. Joll as supervisor, quickly evolved order out of apparent chaos and by the time of the opening ceremony the judging had been completed and the prize-winners’ exhibits were ticketed. A fine array of trophies had a prominent place. Well stocked ■ stalls were a silent tribute to the hard wofk put in to the show by the ladies. The stalls appeared to do good business. Those in charge of the stalls were: Plain sewing, Mesdames W. Joll, A. B. Radford, Misses M, Gavin and A.,J011; fancy, Mrs. H. Joll and Miss M. Goddard; cake; Mesdames H. J, M, Wells, J. Armstrong and 1. Smart; sweets, Misses J. Barnard, E. Butcher, G. Hoskins and'Mrs. Pearce; produce, Messrs. Bristol andf R. Robinson; afternoon tea, Mesdames J. H. Redward,- W. Hoskin, Bingham, Misses A. Pearce, N. Smart, D. Penman and G. Hansen. ' The show was opened by the patrol 1 !, the Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Labour. The president, Archdeacon G. H. Gavin extended a welcome to Hie Minister. There were large attendances at the show yesterday afternoon and evening, proceedings in the evening being enlivened by competitions and orchestral music. The show will be continued this afternoon and again this evening when trophies will be presented by the senior vice-president, Dr; Adamson, and later there will be a sale of produce.
