HON. S. G. SMITH
ELEVATION TO CABINET RANK. -PUBLIC CONGRATULATIONS. Prior to the commencement of a postsessional address in New Plymouth last night by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. S.‘ G. .Smith) opportunity was taken by thelMayor (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths), who presided, to extend public congratulations to Mr. Smith on his elevation to Cabinet rank.
In introducing the speaker Mr. Griffiths said that the early part of the meeting would be entirely non-political in nature, and he would extend to the member for New Plymouth the hearty congratulations of the district on attaining Cabinet rank. It had been intended for some time, said Mr. Griffiths, to hold a public function at which the. people could congratulate Mr. Smith on his appointment to the Ministry of Labour, but it had not been possible to arrange a suitable date. Mr. Griffiths proceeded to review Mr. Smith’s untiring work in public life extending over a long period of years, and to extend to him the hearty congratulations of the town and district on his well-de-served success, and on the distinction with which he was filling his portfolio.
On rising to express his thanks for the congratulations extended to him, the Hon. Mr. Smith was greeted with warm applause from the crowded. Jiousa,
