HAWERA SPRING SHOW

EVENTS IN THE RING COMPETITIONS ATTRACT PUBLIC PRETTY JUMPING WITNESSED. As is customary on the first day of the show, ring events proved popular with the public, the stand being partially filled and the rails being, lined. It was noticeable, however, that most of the spectators were country folk, the attendance of the townspeople being disappointing. . Hunting competitions were the order of the day and some pretty jumping was seen. The rain had been sufficient to take the sting out of the track without making it slippery, the fencing being clean throughout. The principal event was the competition for. the Bryce Rose Bowl for the best hunter carrying not less than 12st. The winner was Gentleman Jack, owned by Miss M. J. Stewart, Halcombe, which gave a firstclass exhibition, taking wire fences, brushes, walls and water jump easily and neatly. The judge, Mr. T. E. Whelch, Wanstead, Hawke’s Bay, was pleased with the class of animals in the jumping competitions. The wire jumping, he said, was particularly good. The women riders earned Mr. Whelch’s commendation. The useful instruction given pupils is demonstrated by the result of pupils’ efforts during the year. Recognised as having a sound office routine course, the school has some fine samples of commercial work. This, together with geography, forms one* of the features of the exhibit. In the latter subject. the methods of making the work interesting by the use of topical photographs and pictures are \well illustrated- The set of photographs shows conditions on a mahogany plantation. The number of. shorthand certificates displayed testifies to .the success obtained: in this department.- . _ _ The engineering exhibit illustrates he course,of work which does not aim. to replace apprenticeship but to make bovs more useful and careful as tradesmen. Drawing and sketching are displayed together with the more interesting apparatus used in experimental work. The practical work commences with sheetmetal, a knowledge of which is frequently of great use- to farmers. The practical application of theoretical work is noticeable.
