FIRE BRIGADE PRACTICE
FIRE POLICE IN OPERATION. The New Pldhiouth Fire Brigade held a wet practice on Tuesday night, there being a gooijTnuster of officers and members. Members of the Fire Police also paraded. Superintendent A. Boon welcomed the Fire Police and mentioned that at a recent meeting of the Fire Brigade Captain Petty had attended arid it had been suggested that the Fire Police should conic alongrioccasionally to the brigade practices. Their attendance would tend to keep them intpi'ested. in the work and at the same time in close touch with what the brigade was doing. One of the main duties of the police was to divert traffic from the scene of a fire. At a recent fire in Devon Street West, for instance, traffic was very congested. It was desirable that this should not happen again. Superintendent Boon with a. number of the brigade then turned out with the Derr’, engine and used several leads of hose from the sump in Devon Street opposite the Criterion Hotel, and later from the sump, in Brougham Street, while the Fire Police under Captain Petty diverted the traffic from the scene of operations. Both sumps were found quite satisfactory, the. Dennis pumps throwing out strong leads. Another squad of the brigade remained at the station in charge of Sub-Superintendent Ford for ladder and motor drill practice.
