ATHLETICS FOR GIRLS
HAWERA CLUB'S DECISION. REMITS FOR N.Z. COUNCIL. A new departure in the history of Taranaki athletics was decided upon last night, when the ladies’ executive of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club resolved to hold an evening athletic meeting for ladies on Tuesday, December 16. Mrs. T. J. Allan presided. Th. proposed programme includes a, 75 yards race, javelin throw, 440 yards walk, discus throw, 440 cycle, primary school girls’ 75 yards, secondary school girls’ 100 yards and hop, step and jump. One men’s event, a 75 yards race, is included. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association council’s proposal to include two junior events in the list of New Zealand championships was discussed. A letter from Mr. A. Gray, headmaster of the Hawera High School, was read suggesting that efforts be made to persuade the council to include in its programme a secondary school girls’ championship. The meeting approved the suggestion and decided to pass the matter on to the men’s executive for approval and submission to the council. - At last night’s meeting of the ladies’ executive of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club Mrs. E. Higgs stated her intention of donating a cup to the girls who gained most points in field events during the season.
