SURPRISE DIVIDENDS

TRUE BLOOD PERFORMS WELL. DESCRIPTION OF THE RACING. (By Wire—Special to News.) Hamilton, Last Night. Fine weather favoured the conclusion of the Waikato spring meeting at Te Rapa to-day, but the track was still soft after the rain on the first day. True Blood repeated his Waikato Cup success in the Hamilton Handicap and the Great Northeim Guineas winner Karapoti accounted for the open sprint. With the exception of First Lap and Steady Fire all the winners were well backed and favourites were successful in three of the last four races. C. Goulsbro followed his first day successes by riding another two winners, making a total of five wins for the meeting. As a result of a good finishing effort on the first day, when he was kept a long way behind the leaders over the first mile, Glena Bay was installed a pronounced favourite over Pendavies for the Matangi Hurdles, but he failed to handle the greasy going and could only finish third. The race resolved into an exciting tussle /between Pendavies and Lupin Abbey, and superior jumping enabled Pendavies to just win. The winner gained lengths by his brilliant fencing and outjumped Lupin Abbey at the last fence, where he gained over a length advantage. Lupin Abbey, who was the outsider of the field, raced like an improver, but Glenstar could not act in the ground and was well back. Ruby Dawn was in the lead for a mile and then retired, while Air King ran only moderately. J

OUTSIDERS FELL PLACES. Two■ outsiders, First Lap and Ritas Light, filled the dividend places in the Frankton Handicap, in which Rosshire and Stonehenge were best backed. Arch. I Eagle led for three furlongs, when he gave way to Rita's Light and Searcher, who were the leaders round the bend, j Rita's Light looked like winning at the distance but First Lap finished well on thei outside to beat her by a length. 'Stonehenge was two and a-half lengths away third and Arch Eagle was fourth. The winner is the first of the progeny of the imported horse Lapidary, to win. He was at a long price. Rita s Light also returned a substantial second dividend. Rosshire was well up early but drifted in the middle stages and was never afterwards dangerous. INVESTORS AGAIN ASTRAY. Investors received another reverse in the Ruakura Stakes when the moderately fancied Limeen finished fast on the outside to win from Toujours. Baroscope, Chief Jewel and Royal Artist were the favourites but they all raced below expectations, although Royal Artist ran third and Baroscope showed plenty of speed to the turn, where he ran very wide. Baroscope led to the turn and then Royal Artist went up on the rails, while Toujours, Illuminelli and Limeen were all handy. Inside the distance Limeen came fast on the outside to beat Toujours by a length, Royal Artist being half a length away third. Illuminelli and Exaggeration were next. Limeen is a bay filly by Limond from Molleen Oge and n as pur - chased at the Trentham yearling sales by Mrs. S. L. Parsons, Wanganui, for 100 guineas. She is trained by I. L. Russell at Te Awamutu. Her performance was nothing to enthuse over but she is an improving filly who may win more races when the good ones are absent. Chief Jewel dwelt at the start

but showed some speed when bustled along in the straight and' is likely to do better later.

Tii winning the Hamilton Handicap True Blood repeated his performance of last year of accounting for the two leading handicaps .at the meeting. Mervette was a hot favourite over ValToe with True Blood fourth choice at a fair price. Valroe was quickly prominent from Flying Prince and Valsier, with Mervette and True Blood bringing up the rear. Valroe and Valsier were the leaders into the straight from Flying Prince and True Blood, and when heads were turned for home True Blood challenged. In a punishing finish True Blood just beat Valroe by a neck, Flying Prince being half ", length away third. Mervette was fourth and Valsier fifth. True Blood finished in his usual determined fashion and just outstayed Valroe, who made a fine showing. Mervette displayed no dash and raced as if she were feeling the effects of her race on Saturday. PENDAVIES’ STEEPLECHASE. Only five started in the Ciarkin Steeplechase. Pendavies was favourite, although he was at a good price considering the strength of the opposition. Pendavies and Kawini were the leaders over the first round, after which Kawini fell back beaten. Mashoor then moved up and seven furlongs from home he went up to Pendavies with a challenge. However, Pendavies always acid him safely and drew out in the straight to win by five lengths. Spalupin wvs a furlong away third, with Cullgie, who refused at the second to last fence but got over at the second attempt, and Kawini another furlong away. It was a weak field and the winner was again assisted by his jumping.

CRUACHAN AN IMPROVED HORSE.

Te Hoia and Biddy’s Boy were better fancied than Cruachan for the Wai-

kato Hack Cup, but they both failed to show the dash expected, whereas Cruachan galloped in his best style and won well. > Biddy’s Boy and Vai Simon made the running until near the home turn, where Cruachan assumed command to be first round the bend from Biddy’s Boy, Gay Caballero, Vai Simon and Protomint. Cruachan more than held his own at the finish to score by a length from Indolent, who finished well on the outside to beat Te Hoia by half a length. Archileen was fourth and Gay Caballero fifth. Cruachan yas offered for sale on Saturday but failed to attract a bid. He is an improved horse since going into the care of R. C. Syme, who had another double winner at the meeting in Pendavies. Biddy’s Boy had every chance and failed badly at the finish, while Te Hoia did not impress, although he came home fairly well on the rails. KARAPOTI A HOT FAVOURITE. The Great Northern Guineas winner Karapoti was backed down to a short price in the Kirikiriroa Handicap and he duly scored, although he was hard pressed at the finish by Prince Vai and Lucy Rose. Master Latour and Prince Vai led for about two and a-half furlongs, when Prince Vai and Karapoti cleared away to come into the straight clear of Kingfield and Lucy Rose. Karapoti stayed on well over the last furlong and gained the verdict by half a length from Prince Vai, who defeated Lucy Rose by a similar margin. Hakanoa was fourth and Kingsfield fifth. Karapoti displayed considerable brilliancy and is likely to -win more races through the season. Prince Vai ran up to his best form and Lucy Rose improved upon her first day’s running, which was a good way below her best. STEADY FIRE ALL THE WAY. The Sir Russell—Antique bracket was heavily backed for the Tauwhare High-

weight Handicap, but the winner turned up in Steady Fire, who was at a good price. Steady Fire and Sir Russell led early and Steady Fire drew out near the turn to win by a length from the fast-finishing Antique, who defeated Sir Russell by three-parts of a length. Sea Cob was a moderate fourth and Mosaic was fifth. Steady Fire carried 61b overweight and never gave anything a chance in the straight, although he had had enough at the finish. Antique was not suited by the going and issure to do better. FEILDING SPRING MEETING. HANDICAPS FOR FIRST DAY. I By Telegraph.—Press Association. \ Feilding, Last Night.
