LABOURER INSOLVENT

UNSUCCESSFUL IN BUSINESS. FORMER ELTHAM SOLICITOR. Un6ucce<ssful business ventures,' lack of employment during periods of slackness and pressure by his creditors were ascribed by Douglas Clement, labourer, Te Kiri, and formerly solicitor of Elthara, who appeared before the D.0.A., Mr. R. S. Sage, at Hawera yesterday, as the niain auses of his bankruptcy. The amount owing to unsecured creditors is £494 12s 7d, the only assets beincr book debts estimated to produce £3O? Creditors present or represented at the meeting, which was adjourned sine die, were Newton King, Ltd., Eltham Motors, Ltd., and Mr. G. W. Peebles. The principal creditors are: H. J. Andrews, £26 10s 6d; Eltham Borough Council, £24; J. H. Morton, £24; 0. Manley, £l6 18s; Eltham Motors, Ltd., £4O; G. W. Peebles (all of Eltham), £22; J. B. Mac Ewan and Co., Ltd., £2O 12s; Newton King, Ltd. (New Plymouth),- £3B 15s 4d; Trade Auxiliary Co. (Christchurch), £7l 9s 6d; G. R. Robinson, £24 19s; Mrs. M. Heyes (Marton), £lOO. “I started business in Eltham in 1924 and continued till June, 1927,” said bankrupt. “The business was not a success and I went to Te Kiri to work at my father’s sawmill at £6 per week. I stayed' there about four months and left to go iuto a carrying business at Marton. There was still a good deal owing from the Eltham business, including most of the debts now shown. The business in Martpn was successful for the first four months. Then I had an accident, being run over by a motor-lorry. This laid me up for about four months during the slack season. When I resumed work I -found the company had gone back so far as to be incapable ol carrying on. I continued in the business until the end of September and the company ceased to carry on business owing to its position. “For the next six months I was unemployed, drawing in that period total wages of £8 13s; that was in Foxton. In February, 1929, my father lent me a lorry and I commenced carrying at Marton, but owing to the unsuitability of the truck for winter work I licensed it only for the manure and grain season, which lasted till May of that year. I reduced my liabilities by approximately £65 in that period, under pressure of judgment summons. For the next three- months I was unemployed. 1 “I then had three months’ work with the Rangitikei Council as a labourer at 16s per day. I was again unemployed, with the exception of one week till the end. of January, 1930. In February I came again to Taranaki and commenced to work at a sawmill at Te Kiri where lam still employed. My wages are £5 per week, and out of that wage I have been averaging in payments to my creditors from 30s to £2 per week. I have a family of five—the eldest being 7 years and th 3 youngest four months. I find it is impossible to keep making these payments and maintain my family. Practically all my creditors have taken judgment against me and several have from time to time issued judgment summones. There was one issued for hearing on November 3, and as- other judgment creditors were threatening similar action, I decided to file. I can make no offer to my creditors at the present time.” BOWLING COMPETITIONS. DRAW IN THE ELTHAM CLUIB.
