Lord Brotherton, a wealthy Leeds chemical manufacturer, who died last month, left £1,750,000. The duties amount to £BOO,OOO. His bequests include £lOO,OOO to Leeds University. Mr. J. Millward has been appointed to th© Wanganui Harbotu* Board in the place of Mr. A. G. Bignell. The appointment was in the hands of the City Council. Mr. W’. A. Burgess was also nominated but defeated on a division. Guests at the Criterion, New Plymouth, include Mr. and Mrs. E. Lewis and Miss Shirley Lewis (Rugby, England), Miss D. Mitchell (Rotorua), Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Taylor (Wellington), Mr. C. G. Salmon (Auckland) and Commander H. C. C. Britton (Rotorua). . A Wellington message reports the death of Mr. Roland H. Pope, aged 63. He joined tlie Education Department in 1883 and retired because of ill-health in 1916, when he was officer in charge of the‘special schools branch. Later he became secretary of the Wellington Stock Exchange and retired a year or two ago.
The death is reported from Wellington of Captain A. M. Edwin, who for many years was in the service of the Union Company, commanding many vessels in the fleet, including the Maori, Wahine, Maheno and Tahiti. He had charge of the Wahine in the war operations in the Mediterranean and afterwards of the troopship Willoclira and the hospital ship Marama.
