SEASON OPENS SUCCESSFULLY. SAILORS COMPETE IN RACES. The New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club opened its track season successfully at Pukekura Park last night. The track was slightly holding after the recent rain, and though the evening was rather chilly there was a good attendance of spectators. Interest was added to the gathering by the inclusion of a number of events for the sailors of H. Dunedin. Throughout the evening close finishes were a feature and the sport was first-class. The officials were Messrs J. S. King (referee and announcer), J. Bennett, jun., L. Hedges and F. Clarke (timekeepers), C. Cuff (marksman)', C. N. Pryor (secretary), F. S. Vatnhajn,'J. S. Ladies’ Relay. —B team, Misses Walsh, Jones (2), Price (20yds) 1. The A team failed to pass the baton well and lost a lot of ground. One Mile Cycle.—J. Gillies (140yds) 1, L. Heatley (90yds) 2, F. Barlow (240 yds) 3. With a lap to go Gillies was 20 yards ahead of Heatley and hung on to win by a length and a-half. Time, 2min 30 l-ssec. 300 yards Handicap.—Perry-Keene (32 yds) 1, S. Fookes (28yds) and J. Pankhurst (24yds) dead-heat 2. Perry-Keene was first away and won by six yards, while Pankhurst got up on the tape to dead-beat for second place. Brennan and Hodgson were next. Time, 31 3-5 sec.
