SEASON OPENS SUCCESSFULLY. SAILORS COMPETE IN RACES. The New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club opened its track season successfully at Pukekura Park last night. The track was slightly holding after the recent rain, and though the evening was rather chilly there was a good attendance of spectators. Interest was added to the gathering by the inclusion of a number of events for the sailors of H. Dunedin. Throughout the evening close finishes were a feature and the sport was first-class. The officials were Messrs J. S. King (referee and announcer), J. Bennett, jun., L. Hedges and F. Clarke (timekeepers), C. Cuff (marksman)', C. N. Pryor (secretary), F. S. Vatnhajn,'J. S. Medley, Reid, Drs. Davie and Thomson (judges).’ Results are: — Sailors’ half-mile walk.:—Shipwright J. Gore 1, A.B. G. Taylor 2, Boy Yearbury 3. The winner led all the way to win by 15 yards, withX a foot between second and third. Time, 4min 12 l-ssec. Ladies’ 50 yards handicap—First heat: Miss, M. .Stevens (3yds), 1, . Miss S. Men’s 50 yards Handicap.—First heat: Sullivan (51yds) 1, Black (2yds) 2, Perry -Keene (6yds) 3. Time, 5 4-ssec. Second heat: Pankhurst (4yds) 1, Medley (4yds) 2, Brown (sJyds) 3. Time, 5 3-ssec. Final: Sullivan 1, Black (penalised lyd) 2, Brown (penalised lyd) 3, Time, 5 3-ssec. Half-mile Cycle.—L. Heatley (40yds) I, J. F. Gillies (75yds) 2, F. Barlow (140yds) 3. Barlow led to within 150 yards of the post, but Heatley finished strongly to win by half a length. Time, Imin 13 3-ssec. Javelin Throw.—G. Sullivan (10ft) 138 ft 1, K. Perry (15ft) 118 ft sin 2, N. Webster (sft) 115 ft 3. Sailors’ 150 yards Handicap.—Signalman A. McLean 1, A.B. J. Hooker 2, A.B. Somerville 3. Six started. McLean led from the start and won byeight yards. 75 yards Hurdles.—G. Sullivan (3yds) 1, H. W. Brown (3yds) 2, S. Fookes (lyd) 3. Won by three yards. Time, 11 2-ssec. 1000 yards Handicap.—V. Hodgson (70yds) 1, R. J. Stewart (80yds) 2, A. Saddler (85yds) 3. Stewart took up the running on the last lap,- but Hodgson had his measure coming into the straight and won comfortably by eight yards. Fox was fourth. Time, 2min 24 2-ssec. Ladies’ Relay. —B team, Misses Walsh, Jones (2), Price (20yds) 1. The A team failed to pass the baton well and lost a lot of ground. One Mile Cycle.—J. Gillies (140yds) 1, L. Heatley (90yds) 2, F. Barlow (240 yds) 3. With a lap to go Gillies was 20 yards ahead of Heatley and hung on to win by a length and a-half. Time, 2min 30 l-ssec. 300 yards Handicap.—Perry-Keene (32 yds) 1, S. Fookes (28yds) and J. Pankhurst (24yds) dead-heat 2. Perry-Keene was first away and won by six yards, while Pankhurst got up on the tape to dead-beat for second place. Brennan and Hodgson were next. Time, 31 3-5 sec.

Sailors’ Jump.—Pegler 15ft oin 1, McPike 15ft 2in 2, Roper 15ft 3. Six competed. Relay.—Athletic Club (Medley, Webster, , Black) 1, Sailors 2. The sailors began well and over the last stage of the journey were ten yards in front, but Black finished in great style to beat McLean by a foot.
