LATE REV. FATHER O’DWYER

LARGE FUNERAL AT MANAIA, . There was a gathering of t many him-, deeds of people from all over Taranaki and from various parts of the island at the funeral of the late Rev. Father Murk M. O’Dwyer, yesterday at Manaia. The visiting clergy numbered 27. A procession formed from the presbytery to the church and there a solemn High Mass was celebrated, the church being crowded to the doors. The pall bearers were Messrs. E. Long, W. Duggan, Dan Ryan, J. A. G. Cosgrove, J. J. Meldon and F. Mourie. At the Requiem Ma-ss, Rev. Father Kennedy (Opunake) was celebrant, Rev. Father Butler (Levin) deacon, Rev. Father Hoare, S.M. (Wanganui), subdeacon, and Rev. Father McDermott (Eltham) master of ceremonies. Other priests present were: Rev. Dr. Mcßae ("Wellington), Rev. Fathers Barr-Brown, Minogue, Trehcy and Foster (New Plymouth), Garrahy (Stratford), Uhlenberg (Masterton), McSherry (Otaki), Parker, C.S.S.R. (St. Gerard’s, Wellington), Brennan (Foxton), Devlin (Takapuna), McLaughlin (Stratford), Lacroix, S.M. (Wanganui), Cashman (Pahiatua),. Guinane (Dannevirke), Lynch (Marton), Broughton (Feilding), Hegarty (Patea), Forrestal (Inglewood), Doolaghty (Taihape), Kelly (Newtown. Wellington), Power (Kilbirnie) and Sweeney (Ohakunc). The choir of priests, led by Father I.acnix, intoned the beautiful Gregorian responses. The service was in every way most impressive. Archbishop O’Shea spoke to the people of their late revered parish priest. Ho said that they would all feel sorrowful at the passing of their ■ priest who had been in charge of the parish for some years, but, he added, his tragically sudden end brought before them the uncertainty of life. Father.O’Dwyer’p medical adviser had been satisfied with his progress in the hospital and had looked forward to his going back’ to his work, but the end had come unexpectedly and it was evidently God’s will that this should be so. It was a coincidence that it should have happened on that great day, the Feast of All Souls. The end was sudden, but he was sure their priest had been prepared for wiiateyer. might happen and it was good to know the Last Sacrament had. .been administered to him by their venerable Archbishop. Father O’Dwyer, said his Grace, had come, to New Zealand, over twenty-five years ago from Ireland and had spent the whole time, with the t exception of a short period at Feilding, in Taranaki, having been associated with the late Monsignor. Power at Hawera and. then gone to Manaia some years ago. He ’ had celebrated his silver jubilee this year and had seen a new parochial school erected, and it would seem that his work on earth was done, for God had called him to Himself. He had striven to carry out Good’s /word ano could therefore face the future without apprehension. The priest, said his Grace, had great responsibilities and therefore required the utmost help and tho fervent prayers of his people so that .he might the better, carry put tho high ideals of the priesthood. “And the lesson to us all,” added the Arclibishop, “is the certainty of death sooner or later. Immortality was a great gift to our first parents, but through sin came death. It is .appointed to all ‘ once .to .die and after death comes, judg- ' ment and we must, all prepare by a good life to face that judgment, asking God for His blessing that we may accept our end with resignation. Your priest you will always remember, because he was always so ,kind dnd so iqharitable in all he said and .did. May 1 he rest in peace. Amen.”./ A long line of over a hundred cars bearing mourners from all over , naki followed the hearse to the ceme- ; tery. The serVicp at the grave yas conducted. by the Archbishop.
