HELMETS FOR POLICE
replacing the shako. NO INSTRUCTIONS ISSUED. No instructions have yet .been issued by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. W. G. Wohlmann, in connection with the re-introduction of helmets for the police force in place of the shako which is at present worn on day duty. Mr. Wohlmann stated at Auckland on Thursday that no date had been fixed for the change, preparations for which were still proceeding. The shako was introduced among other alterations in the police uniform by Mr. W. B. Mcllveney after he assumed the office of commissioner, the other major change made being the incorporation of silver buttons on tunics in place of the dark braid buttons hitherto used. The shako is worn on day duty, the helmet still being worn by constables on the night shift. In the summer months the white helmet takes the place of the shako, which is only worn during the summer on wet days.
