ELTHAM TENNIS OPENS
THURSDAY AFTERNOON FUNCTION.
The courts of the Eltham Tennis Club were formally opened for the season on> Thursday, when many visitors as well as local players were present. The president, Mr. A. Picard, extended a cordial welcome to the visitors and wished the club a successful season. The courts | were in splendid condition and it was anticipated that there would be a very large increase in membership this year. The courts of St. Joseph’s club will 'be open for play to-day.
ELTHAM JUNIOR RED CROSS.
PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES.
To present the certificates of the Elthaiii Junior Red Cross Society a social was held at All Saints’ schoolroom on Thursday, Sister Ingles and Miss Lessington, a Junior Red Cross official" from Dominion headquarters, >vere present. The Mayor, Mr. I. J. Bridger, presented the certificates, the recipients being Misses M. Salmon, Jx. Salmon, L. Lambert and K. Ower.
In recognition of the assistance she had given to the candidates Miss Ferme Ricketts was presented with a book. Competitions were won by Misses Lambert and Lissington. Songs were contributed by Mesdames I. J. Bridger and Collingwood and a recitation by Miss Ven Davis.
SLACK BUILDING PERIOD.
The amount expended on buildings in Stratford during the past month was only half the amount for which permits were issued by the borough council during October, 1929, the totals being £llOO and £2285. . | ; A dwelling (£800) and alterations to a dwelling (£300) constituted the building activity for the past four weeks but in J 929 permits were issued in October for two garages of £6OO and £35, two dwellings each of £BOO and an alteration costing £5O.
PERSONAL ITEMS.
A comprehensive programme of entertainment is embraced by the sale of wci’l: of the Holy Trinity Church to be held in the Parish Hall, Stratford, on Tuesday. The doors will be opened at 11 a.m. and a cold lunch may be had from 12 o’clock. Numerous stalls decked with a variety of goods and produce will be displayed. The evening session will be commenced with a variety entertainment at 7 p.m. followed by euchre at 8 p.m, and supper. The prizes at the euchre tournament at the C.E.M.S. Club, Eltham, on Thursday were won by Mrs. Scown, Mrs. Thornhill, Mrs. Pepperell and Mrs. J. Taylor.
“SWANEE RIVER MINSTRELS.”
The Stratford minstrels are in great form and the entertainment to be staged at the Stratford Town Hall next Thursday promises to. be one of the most popular for many years. It is good to note that ‘ there is to be a revival of the songs, popular years ago and still appreciated. There is no doubt that people will greatly appreciate something different from rag-time and next Thursday they will have the opportunity of showing their appreciation in practical form. The box plan is open at Mr. Rex Watson’s.
ELTHAM THEATRE TALKIES.
PUTTIN’ ON THE RITZ.
If you like a riot of colour, dances, fun and frolic, ‘•'Puttin’- on the Ritz” is “the goods.” This fine musical extravaganza will be screened at Elthain to-night. 'To hear Harry Richman sing “There's- Danger in Your Eyes, Cherie,” and “Singing a Vagabond Song,” is alone worth while apart from the wonderful coloured “Alice in Wonderland” scene.. The whole entertainment is pleasing in every way.
