WATER FROM JORDAN USED

BIG GATHERING OUTSIDE

INTEREST IN ROYAL BABY

By Telegraph—Press Assn.— Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. . London, Oct. 30. Water from the River Jordan was poured into the golden lily font, designed for the christening of .Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter, just before Their Majesties entered the private chapel of Buckingham Palace to-day in readiness for the baptism of Princess Margaret. White Yorkist roses, marguerites, heather and lilies decorated

the tiny chapel, which was filled by Royalties, including the white-clad Princess Elizabeth, also the Duke and Duchess of York, relatives and servants. The ba'by Princess was clothed in a robe of cream satin and. old Brussels lace made for the christening of Queen Victoria and used at every Royal christening since.

The five sponsors included Lady Patricia Ramsay,-Prince George (representing Princess Ingrid) and the Prince of Wales. Princess Victoria, who was a sponsor, took the Princess from the nurse and handed her to the Archbishop of Canterbury, who sprinkled water on her forehead and baptised her- “Margaret Rose.” There was a huge gathering of babies in; prams and in their mothers’ arms outside the palace to witness the departure. As the car containing the Duke and Duchess of York, and the princesses swept out the crowd surrounded it, ■cheering and waving handkerchiefs. The Duchess ordered the car to proceed at a walking pace for a quarter mile, enabling hundreds to see the baby, whom the nurse held .up. There was an informal tea. party at the Duchess’ home, at which two ict.l christening cakes, made in Scotland, were cut.
