1892 MYSTERY CLEARED
CONFESSION ON DEATH BED
LORA GORGE MURDER RECALLED. ACCUSED CLEARED OF 'SUSPICION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. The Lora Gorge murder, by which the name of a crime committeed 38 years ago has been known, is no longer a mystery, for recently, it is stated, a deathbed confession was made which completely clears from suspicion a man who stood in the dock at Winton charged with the crime and many others who were under the cloud. The crime concerned the death of Richard Bell at Lora Gorge on July 25, 1892. An arrest was subsequently made and accused, after'’evidence had been taken in the lower court at Winton, was committed for trial at the sitting of the Supreme Court at Invercargill. The Crown, however, did , not proceed with the charge and the crime has remained a mystery every since.
